I'm sure someone has come along and used a AC compressor for more than just AC. Can it be done, and if so, anyone have any creative ideas for its use. Tires and general maintenance are the first to come to mind but not the last. :D
Yup, York compressors are very popular for 4x4 guys and on board air systems. You might run a search at www.pirate4x4.com (http://www.pirate4x4.com)
A while ago the topic of the week was OBA and there was some good information, and links to some good writeups. AFAIK the FSJ's compressor works great, and can even be used for air tools. I personally haven't done this, but I don't even have a compressor.

yes it can and is done all the time, i have one in both of my jeeps. both are ran to storage tanks but it can be ran just strait off the compressor for airing tires. there is 2 ports off the compressor one marked S (suction) and i believ the other is P(pressure) jsut do some adapting to the presser side to connect an air hose. 90% of people use the York compressor with was common in jeep FSJ and Volvos but i have seen other AC compressors used. off the front is a wire that when power is aplied engages the clutch to turn the compressor

here is how mine is ran
air filter and then inline oiler on the intake side so a light mist is sucked into the compressor just to make sure it lives longer then it goes threw a water seporator that also traps the oil as you do not want to be puming it into your tires, then a check valev(one way valve so no back flow) and then a T with a 225psi pop off valve(safty) once inside my rig it then is pumped into my rollcage(or air tank but i set up my cage air tight) with a pressure switch to turn on and off the compressor.the switch is ran to a relay that is connected to the clutch wire.
mine is set to cycle on below100psi and off at 200
this may seem high but it lasts longer if your tank can handle it,and the compressor definatly can.
if you need to know where to find the presser switch or any parts just e-mail me i know places to get them realy cheap
