View Full Version : Engine/Tranmission Noises!

Okay, it's been one year since $1000 and a trans rebuild and Sluggo's been running okay but... In the past few months, I'd get a "rattle" from the engine area which sounds very much like my old Coupe de Ville's catalytic converter which had a shield on it that worked loose. This noise only appears when traveling and I cannot make it appear - it just happens.
I took it back to the transmission shop, thinking it was related. He tells me he thinks it's the thrust bearing and there's a good amount of slop on the crank. My mechanic told me not to dismiss the thought as he's seen such things but he couldn't get it to make the noise himself.
This is occurring more frequently now and it's getting me concerned. When it happens, I can shift to neutral and back and it will usually clear up. Sometimes, I'll need to pull over and stop and it will clear when I get going again. When driving, it sounds like it's coming from the forward section of the transmission hump.
If it's the thrust bearing, wouldn't it be losing oil? It's still full (from the last change in November) and runs fine. There's no associated vibrations or anything like that.
Any thoughts?

my thrust/main bearings are shot, and from the crank walking all over the place, it leaks oil like a seive....
