Got my cherokee and was told had amc 20.......its a 81 cherokee with the 258

Wondering if i can regear this to 4.88s also read in a thread that this axle is a one piece shaft axle and is stronger then the 44.....is this true.....also does anybody make stronger axle shafts for this axle....

I am putting a set of 37s under it and its locked

I know switching to a ford or chevy axle is best but money of course would be nice to save.....and i really dont want to get ride of my 6 lug options....thanks for your help

It has a larger pinion than a Dana 44 so it should be stronger.

Yes, you can put 4.88's in it. That looks like as low as you can go.

I am sure you can have Moser or one of the other axle manufacturers build you a set of custom axles. They make a replacement for the CJ, so you would just need them longer and with a 6 lug pattern.

Yes, you would have to get new rims, but a GM 14 bolt can be had for about $75 and a Dana 60 for around $150 at most pick 'n pull yards. That is a lot cheaper than alloy axles for yours.
