Sounds like the distributor moved. Did you check the timing?

when my wags 360 was backfiring thru the exhaust,it was running too rich and a new coil was the solution. replacement parts have been known to fail. i would also check out the carb. if it was me, i'd go back over the ground ive covered. i know me. is the distributor a points type? they are a suspect too. ps, i am assuming this is a 360. it greatly helps the arm chair diagnosis, if it is known what the rig is. good luck, please post the results

Was the engine backfiring before you started replacing the items you mentioned? If not, try replacing the dist. cap with the old one. Also, try the rotor button. Either could be defective.
Did you change anything inside the dist?

Yes it was backfiring when I started. Put new rotor in. Put pertronix ignitor in last May and took out the points. This all started last week, truck was running fine till then.

Exhaust backfires don't have much to do with ignition parts, according to the service manual. Most common causes (quote):
1. air leak into manifold vacuum.
2. faulty diverter valve
3. faulty choke operation (not opening far enough making it too rich--lubricate linkage)
4. exhaust leak (cured my backfire by tightening exhaust manifold-to-pipe bolts by 1/2 turn!!)
Timing spec is (at operating temp, curb idle at 600 RPM, 10 degrees advanced, +/- 1 degree. Timing is more important with intake backfires, though.

The module on the pertronix ignitor came loose from the rivet. Pertronix is sending me a new one out, thanks for the input guys
