I finally checked the compression on my new 88 wag. Here's the numbers.
#1-150 dry
#2-150 dry
#3-130 dry
#4-170 dry
#5-120 dry
#6- didnt check
#7-148
#8-didnt check
I didn't check the 6 or 8 cause it was dark and they are too hard to get to. When i crank the jeep the pressure goes up to 45 or so. After it warms up at idle it will barely register. Accelerating it will go up anywhere from 20 to 40 depending on how long I'm driving it. It doesn't blow oil but it does have oil leaks on the valve covers, rear main seal, and I think the intake is leaking. In the past few days the valves have started tapping upon acceleration from idle. Also i found where one of the nuts on the exhaust donut is missing. Is my oil pump going bad? Also it has spiked the gauge a few times all the way to 80 on the gauge when i first crank it up. I'm thinking that the oil pump is going bad cause the pressure to drop causing the valves to rattle upon accel. What do yall think?????

The rattle is most likely timing, most likely. But just reaf your other post, probably going to have to get the vacuum situation squared before you can check timing and other stuff.....IMHO.

My oil pressure is about the same as yours. If the valves are making noise on acceleration your oil channels running up to the head may be clogged. If you see a lot of sludge under the valve cover then that may be your problem. Are you positive that the rattle is caused by lack of oil? It may be pinging.

The rattling started a few days ago before i messed with it. I've been watching my oil gauge and have noticed that it is dropping more and more over the past week or two. It doesnt rattle during idle. Only on acceleration.

How many miles on the engine?
Can you set the timing and willit hold?
If not you may have a worntiming chain?
Just a thought.

No I havent messed with the timing yet or checked the chain. The od reads 150 something I think. While looking under it it looked like it might be a new motor in it. The freeze plugs look brand new and the spots that dont have oil on them look brand new too. Not rust on the block what so ever.
