Hi guys, I purchased a 1972 J-4000 "Camper Special" last year and have been going over it as fast as money and time allow. It has D44/D60 (F/R), Dana 20 xfer case, TH400 (with adapter plate) and 360. I have a PTO winch that I would like to mount on it but as far as I can tell the D20 does not have a PTO port on it. What can I do to provide a PTO port for the winch? I have reviewed past comments and haven't seen any subjects pertaining to this problem. I hope I am not asking a question that has already been answered. Thanks for the help

there a couple ways to skin that cat smile.gif the first wuld be to obtain a dana 20 pto. this unit replaces the pan,and is driven by(i think) the straight cut part of the intermediate gear. these are fairly rare, tho, so expect to pay $250-$300 or more for one. send some email to: hermtheoverdriveguy@yahoo.com he was supposed to get some in ahwile back, but said they go quick.
the 2nd method would be to swap in a manual tranny with a pto port, like a t18.
the 3rd method would be to find a gm th400/205 and swap the gm tailshaft and adapter onto your tranny so you could use the 205. dont have any idea how common it would be,but ive seen ptos on 205s. they look like the same unit that would bolt to the pto port of the tranny, but may be slightly different?
last and not least, surplus center(800 488 3407) sell pto drive units that are hydraulically operated.you could power one of those from a power steering pump, and mount the unit fairly close to the winch to simplify the pto drivesahft and assorted linkage.
i installed a very large tow truck pto winch in the bed of my GW,and ended up with 3 carrier bearings to hold the sahft since i only used a 3/4" shaft and it is so long(1 in the middle,2 at the very end,on either side of the drive chain sprocket)
#4 method may be one of the better ways to go,i considered adding a 2nd pto winch up front, but it looks like a nightmare gettig a driveshaft up to where the winch would be.lots of stuff in the way-motormounts,axle,exhaust,to name a few smile.gif this will depend some on the pto,of course, the output on a pan-style pto will be much lower than the one on my spicer 18,so it may be more practiacal to run the shaft from it.
anyway, hope this info helps you out,let us know which way you go and how it turns out.
pto winchs are cool,im real happy with mine

Thanks for the help Scotty, I emailed the guy about the Dana 20 PTO unit and will see what he says. It sounds like I need to do a little looking around to try and determine parts availablity before I make a decision. Alaska doesn't have the parts resources that you have down in the "lower 48" smile.gif . I appreciate your help and will let you know which way I go.
