I know that EVERYONE has done lifts and added large tires. But has anyone ever dropped a FSJ? has anyone even seen it done? Am I the only idiot that wants to see this done?
I can't find pics anywhere on the net. reply if you have seen any.

much to my amazement...you aren't the only idiot who wants to see this done :D I recall seeing a thread with a link to a site where some other idiot had done it.

Can't recall whether I actually saw it or not though...

BTW....you wanna see it done so you can laugh at them...right? ;)

To laugh at them? YEAH! ofcourse thats the reason. ;) what other reason could it be.

I saw a pic of a WT Cherokee dropped down to the ground. It had some tacky looking gradient change paint that when from Orange on the bottom to yellow on the top. The WT wouldn't be the best choice, IF someone would ever want to do it. This J truck was lowered 3"...it doesn't look bad...to each his own. http://www.ifsja.org/readers/gladiators/ungar.shtml

That's an awesome picture.
And yeah, you do have too much time on your hands!

I had a 75 J10 that seemed to have been lowered a couple of inches. It was my first SJ so I didn't have anything to compare it with, but i think it was missing spring leaves. I hit the bumpstops on rough roads, and if I had a moderate load in the bed, the driveshaft rubbed the flange on the side of the gas tank, which was not only VERY dangerous, but it made the most horrendous screaming sound I ever heard.
It wasn't for off-road use, but it looked kinda cool.
It was dayglo blue, too
:D

maybe this isn't completely pertinent, but have any of you seen that ferrari-powered wagoneer at the car museum in Reno, Nevada? It was a while ago that I saw it, but I vaguely remember. Seems like the dude made lots of trips in Nevada and sometimes in the winter so he made a fast 4x4 by dropping a ferrari v-12(?) into the heep.

Bigums~

I like it, but then I like street rods period. I think it would look even better if it was a Cherokee, all black with the exception of the grille and powered by a 502 BBC.

I guess all the Cyclone, Typhoon, Lightning and 5.9 RT owner's are idiots too.

I'm surprised that some folks will snarl, spit and bite back when the CJ/TJ/YJ folks say the SJ is NOT a real Jeep and then pounce on a guy for wanting to build an SJ his "own" way.

05-22-2002, 12:39 PM
Thats actually kinda neat, but it needs the top chopped, not chopped off, just dropped down say 5"

BigPaul
05-22-2002, 12:43 PM
What, lower one?!!! Why don't you just build a rice burner car with to big a racing fin and some baked on bowling ball paint job with too much metal flake? Will you go with the nice blue flourescent light above the rearview mirror that thumps with the beat of the woofers? Dude, I'd like to see it just to laugh. Hey, I've seen some dually's slammed before and they turned out pretty shrap. But a FSJ, that would be another story.

Remember, it's only a FSJ if it won't fit in your standard garage!!! Same thought as this guy had--it was a nice detail job, but he got the size ratio all wrong!!!

I agree with BigPaul. I think slammed dually's look sweet, but FSJ's ARE a different story. Isn't it all the quirks and all the stuff that doesn't look good/doesn't work that makes our Jeeps what they are? Let's just say I'd have to see one tastefully done (lowered, hot rodded, whatever) before I could say it would look good. My opinion is that if you're going to put money into them, why not just restore them to a clean stock appearance? Oh well, to each his own. -Zach

That looks pretty cool! Its funny because the first thing my friend said when I showed him my G-Wag was: "Dude, ya know what you should do? You should lower it!". I told him I was going to do the exact oposite. :D

Special-K: I have seen pictures of Cherokees dropped. For the rear I wonder if you could basically do a 'spring under axle' conversion, but that may drop everything way to low to even be drivable, a front spring over axle conversion yeilds about 6" of lift, so I'm guessing a SUA would do the same, which is probably to far, would have to get under and see what would get in the way to know for sure though.. In the front you could probably have custom springs made that would lower the height 2 or 3" or so. Whatever you do, its probably going to have to be custom springs/welding, no simple bolt-on's for this one (other than old saggy wag springs hehe). I'll bet you could find a shop that does these types of things for cars and they would have a more ideas on what exactly needed to be done. But my first guess would be custom springs in front, with a lot of custom work (ie springs&welding) in the rear since the rear springs are on top of the axle so you can't simply put in blocks to lower it.

I don't know that this would look so bad if the top was chopped a few inches. The artist drawing of one that someone posted in a thread a couple of months ago looked like it would make a cool street rod.

If I was paid to do it, I'd set the wag body over an S10 frame with a blown 350 in it. There's really no point in retaining the 4wd if you go that low and you wouldn't get the clearance needed in the front end to make it work anyways.

S10's are cheap, and so is a 350/350 combination.

dropped trucks look like flood victims on the news to me, especially that longbed dually.

There is a big difference between "design" and "excectution" and it's well represented in the two trucks above.

The Chero is on the right track but he obviously skimped on the wheels. Fade paint jobs never looked good and the flares have to go.

I will admit, I was thinking about the vertical slot grille but the rhino grille is way cool. I believe it would be an easy task to replace the front D44 with a dropped, tubular straight axle from Bell Tech or similar operation. Converting it to two wheel drive takes away the coolness factor for me but it would simplify the whole process.

Awe man! I was really playing with the idea since my front end is SO sagged right now to go ahead and let this Wag come down a little bit for something "Different."

I'll be acquiring the 83 WT Cherokee to be the monster, and since the Wag will be mainly a daily driver, I thought I'd have a little fun with it. I'm suprised that both ends of the spectrum aren't equally accepted. I'm pretty sure after I do it, I won't exactly be fond of it for long though. It was just going to be a temporary thing until I get my Rusty's 6" kit.

It's like they say...to each his own.
But in my book, ANY lowered truck is
A) Stupid
B) Tragic
C) A waste
D) Useless
But jsut because I can't figure on why anybody would do it don't mean I don't fully support your decision to do it. I have dreams of a huge lifted antique Dodge Powerwagon or other pre-60s truck, but I bet the lowering croud would cringe to see my 30s era chevy 4X4 on 38s :D

No offense to none please...I am just telling you like it is. If you don't have your own opinions, YOU are a waste of space.

This is almost tempting to do because you see Chero's for cheap that run. Boy if I had a garage....

I have a pic of a j-truck slammed i wish i had a way to post it but all i have is the web.the paint scheme red white blue of the team amc trans am race cars. Set up like the trans-am/scca racing 18 inch american racing torq thrust lls, side-outlet exhaust just in the lower front part of the bed.camaro front bumber/air dam.TONNEAU cover with built-in spoiler. am thinking of doing this to mine also!!!! all ready have a off frame j20 so this would be a nice set. goig down the road !!!!.

Sheeeoooot.... I'm gonna go out with a torch tonight and heat my springs until they drop waaaaaaaay down. I've been looking for that righteous image that would actually compliment a pair of fuzzy dice hanging off the mirror!

One thing I've wanted to do for quite some time is get a Grand Wagoneer, lower it a few inches front and rear, remove the 4WD, and swap in a supercharged, fuel injected 401 with a race prepped 727. I'd like to see how quick I can make it do the 1320.

BigBadWag
05-23-2002, 02:41 PM
Well, what can I say? Bigums inspired me! :D This is my rendition of a *tastefully lowered* FSJ. Notice the chopped top; speed grille; big billet wheels; shaved door handles, emblems, mirrors, marker lenses, and taillights; the dark tinted windows, custom narrow track fender lines, the raked stance on 5 lug 2wd axles, and of course the custom license plate :D The more I think about it, the more possibilites arise... Anyway, here's my idea of a Jeep Lowrider, let me know what you think :D -Zach

http://daphreak45.tripod.com/lowfsj.jpg You'll have to copy and paste that link

BTW, thanks to River Beast's ride for being the donor vehicle

I think RB needs to lower the beast to match the picture and then sell the kits to match his design!! That picture is awesome!!! :D :D

Seriously, why not do what the 'rodders do . . . buy the Mustang II front end, 9" rear end, fully independent suspension welded to the stock frame. I would go with a blown+nitrous 401/727 myself, side exhaust. I love the rhino grill in those sketches, limo black all the way around, shave the door handles, hydraulic the tailgate (12v electrohydraulic cylinders can be found on old outboard steering systems), plush out the interior.

I'm just wondering why you guys are slamming the low rider Jeep so bad? It is what he wants and looks pretty good, I don't think it looks any worse than some of the Jeeps I've had. It makes as much sense as a lifted 2 wheel drive Jeep or even mine with the Line-Xed interior. He did what he wanted and so do you, at least it's a Jeep.

I've got a parts rig in my back yard I'm tempted to go out there and do it to it. All you'd have to do would be either throw a block under your front springs and put really long shackles in the back in stock formation. If you wanted to go even lowwer you could just flip your spring packs upside down. Presto-chango ... ghetto! ;)

mhoffor
05-25-2002, 01:41 PM
When I purchased my first fsj it was a low rider, it seams that if wou can increase your weight to about 300-350 the stock springs will do the rest.
