View Full Version : Is 5 Pole Flat Trailer Connector Factory?

Getting ready to tow and my 88 GW has a flat 5 pole female trailer connector that looks like it was factory installed, it is well tied into vehicle harness and this Jeep has towing pkg. tranny cooler.

88 GW wiring diagram shows 7 wires to Jeep trailer connector:

Red
LT GRN-T
LT GRN
WHT
WHT-T
BLU
BLK

I've seen FSJ forum posts indicating Jeep used 7 pole round connectors.

I know that 5th pole, BLU wire is used for elec. brake, GRN & YEL stop/turn, BRN tail/marker and WHT ground on trailer end.

My questions are:

1. Is the flat 5 pole connector factory (or was it "adapted" from factory 7 pole)?
2. Will a standard flat 4 pole male trailer connector work with my flat 5 pole female?

Any comments will be appreciated, thanks!

The 7 pole "rv" connector is the factory one.
I have never seen a "5 flat" but have seen many "4 flat".
The factory setup includes a relay box on the front side of the rear frame crossmember and a round 7 pin connector tucked between the crossmember and the bumper.
Mine was pretty hacked when I got it (scotch locks and romex,, yes, romex).
If a dspo removed your 7 pin the best thing to do is either replace it yourself or have a good trailer shop do it. This way you will have the 7 pin, which is pretty common and can also get adapters to other connectors if needed (4 flat, 6 round, etc).

my other Gwag has a big flat 4 or 5 don't remember and a regular flat 4. no rv.

my new wag(same year) only had the regular flat 4 and rv. go figure. Both looked stock, but who knows.

Right, thanks again all, I'll crawl under the old gal and locate relay box & re wire 7 pole connector if necc.
