Okay... you told me I couldn't do it with the dinosaur's powerplant (which was rated at almost 450ft/lbs at 1,800 rpm)... so let's try this again.

My 83 has a stock 360.

I plan on doing the TFI conversion for sure. 8.8 wires, the Ford F-350 cap (maybe an Excel one).

I want to simplify the vacuum system, and take out the emissions system as well.

What's it gonna take to get 18mpg? IT *can* be done right? This rig is light trail and beach use only.. I'm looking for a J-20 or 715 to make a monster out of.

Sorry guys, I used to get 18 with my 77Chero(360,t18,2150 carb) before I started making it better. Better was lift, tires, 4bbl and headers, roof rack, etc.

No secret, that's how it came when I got it. It had H-78-15 tires on it, was low to the ground and of course only had about 50K mi when I bought it. A friend of mine has a very good car shop in Cheyenne and his favorite question for people when they start modifying their rigs is, do you really think you know more than the engineers who built your rig??Yes a lot of the mods we do on our rigs serve some great purpose(i.e. lift kits and bigger tires), but we can't expect to maintain all of the R&D that was put into them new...

Well, SnakeEyes....I think ya got a name for your waggy! http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif "Project 18" or P18 maybe? I still like "Wag with no Name" though....puts a certain song in my head.....you know the one! http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif

I figured I got 15/16 with my '77 Cherry with 360/T15/2bbl carb. That was some years ago. Ran 235/75-15s on it. Also, I tend to drive "conservatively"....no race machines for me! The 77 Cherry was otherwise basically stock.

What are you getting "now"....that might give you a better idea of what you are realistically able to consider.

Besides TFI, you might want to go synthetics, particularly in the axles and if you can get synthetic tranny/t-case fluid. Engine only if it can handle the synthetics at this age. This could maybe ease friction up a bit! I say go for it....do EVERYTHING you can to make it to 18 and keep going if you can! There has to SOMEONE here to really milk the mpg out a 360!
