I have a 1986 grand wagoneer with a 360 V8 automatic. I have regular power when I am pushing the throttle pedal down or releasing it, but when I try to maintain a constant speed the car barely moves even at high engine rpm. I suspect the transmission has a problem, but I don't know what to check. Is there some kind of vacuum or throttle connection to the trans? Any help much appreciated. Thanks, Jenn

start out by checking the atf level on the dipstick. warm the engine, put the trans in n,set the parking brake and check the level. if theres fluid on the stick , does it smell burned? is it real dirty? new atf is purple, old is brown ,real old id black. if you dont know when the filter in the trans was changed last, that is your next step. a clogged filter will exhibit the symptoms you describe. if you are real lucky, thats all it needs.

Hey, Thanx for the suggestion. I changed the filter and will check to see if it helps. It did look like it could have been a little clogged. I hope I am really lucky. If this doesn't fix it, you all will be hearing from me again, I am sure.
Thank you again, andy d. I wouldn't have known where to start. --jenn

I might be way off here but do you still have your cat on? I had the same thing happen on a 89 Camaro I had and the cat was plugged! I was only getting a nickel size flow though it. Just a suggestion!!!!
