I'm learning the TSM ain't the best for a QT newbie.

So far as I can tell, all I need to do to split the case is remove all of the bolts. Am I correct there?

Also, while I'm at it. Do I need to remove any snap rings or anything else to install my new chain? I'm Not using the MM pt kit, just the stock chain kit from BJ's.

Nope. Just the bolts. Make sure you remove ALL of them! ;)

The indicator switch will often have to be removed in order to get that one bolt out on the top of the case.

Flint will be along in a moment and direct you to his QT page. He's considered the QT guru. But I think my pictures are nicer. :p

See my sig link.

Oh, no snap rings are inside.

Thanks Ethan. I did a search for Flints page, but couldn't find it.

One of the PO's has had it open in the past and used some kind of white sealant on it, so the case cover is stuck plenty good. I went around rappin' on it with a two pound hammer handle (no head on it, just a handle) and it now sounds like it's loose, but the thing still won't split.:banghead:

Considering my la la la la back pain I'm having, it's taken three days just to get it on the ground. I guess a measure more patience is still in order.

Got her split. Differential, drive sprocket and chain are now out.

Now here is where I feel compelled to admit "I am an idiot" I forgot to mention I have a 1339. Thanks again for the info Ethan. Without it I'd spent all night whackin' on shtuff with a hammer handle.:o

The fun part is still ahead. Putin' that heavy sucker back up with my la la, la la la back. Thank God for motorcycle service jacks.

Have you removed the low range unit? There is a big snap ring that holds the pinion cage on the top sprocket. There are also 2 dowel pins that need to be negotiated in splitting the case. Did you pull the Edrive indicator light switch to get to the bolt behind it?

D'oh! Forgot about the snap ring in the low range unit.

Good catch, Flint!

Yep, gotten both. I had the light switch out before pulling it loose from the trans. That snap ring though, brought about some head scratchin' and foul muttering.

The major problem was the hard-set sealant one of the PO's had used on the case halves as well as the low range box. I've been changing the oil in the LR box using a small pump to drain it. Figured since the chain needs done, I'd put whole thing on the ground and get the low range loose while I was at it.

Sometimes they do resist the split. :banghead:
So, you have it under control then?

I think so. The new chain is in and case sealed up. Just need to get that bugger back to the trans.

I really appreciate the help guys.

OK - be careful to not let the QT hang on the tranny tailshaft before you get bolts in it - more QT seals are messed up that way. AMHIK :o

good luck!
