my 71 jtruck had all kinds of wiring probs, so I decided to bite the bullet and get a painless truck harness to replace ALL the wiring. I dont know if anyone has done this, but it is not so painless. I have it mostly wired up, but am having a few "kinks". for example, I can start the engine but it wont turn off when I take out the key, when I turn the turnsignal, It blows the fuse. those are the most urgent ones right now, ill post more as they turn up. also, what are the plugs on the steering column for? I have an aftermarket turn signal assembly, so the wires dont go through the coulumn. any advice would be much appreciated.

Here's a link to wiring diagrams...good luck!
I had a hard time with my first harness in a 78 CJ, the turn signals were the only things that didn't turn out just right..it was annoying..

I have used Painless kits on several vehicles and I really like them. Then again, I LOVE doing electrical work and used to have a side business wiring vehicles from scratch. The run-on problem is probably due to feedback from the charging system, and the blown fuse is probably a shorted wire.

Just cut the little red wire, NOT the green
wire. Or was it cut the green wire and NOT
the red wire. Or was it the blue wire that needs
to be grounded first and then splice the pink
wire to the brown wire except on 71 model
year trucks made after June 12th but before
November in which case the brown wires are
sometimes tan because the factory that made
brown wire went on strike.

Hope this helps, I used to write instructions
for Painless Wiring until they moved my
job to China.

I hear ya bear. Mark...im sorry to hear that, I really am. How the hell could anyone "LOVE" automotive wiring. the painless isnt so bad I guess. Compared to rewiring the whole thing with a spool of black wire, Its a walk in the park. thanks for the tips guys
