got a line on an 81 J-10 pick up I'm thinking of buying for a parts truck. My other truck is an 81 cherokee chief. The J-10 has same motor, transfer case, difs. and almost the same tranny as well, the chief has t-178 and the J-10 has t-176. 360 , np208 , dana 44, amc 20. now I've heard that the rear driveshaft may be a heavier unit then what is in the cherokee. not sure if this is true. Also wondering if the front shaft is the same as mine as well. Would it have lower gears in the dif. then whats in the cherokee? These may seem like no brainer questions to the more experienced out there but I'm a newbie so bear with me :D

The front shaft should be the same. The rear shaft might be different, depending on the wheelbase. As far as the gears in the diffs., they could be the same, but they could be completely different. Best bet is to look for the i.d. tags on the diff covers. ;)

The rear shaft will most definitely not work in your Cherokee, though the front should.
Everything else you mention *should* work. Of course, that doesn't mean they WILL work; always verify that what you need would interchange before you commit yourself to this truck as a parts-vehicle.
