Just got a call from the local, glass shop---300$ for a factory new real window.

Gulp!!!!!

Looks like I'll be getting that salvage one from MIB.

However they did give me an interesting tip which I'm posting here in a new thread for future emergency reference.

This local shop suggested going to Lowes or a large carpet store and getting the heavy weight thick sticky backed clear vinyl that is sold as a temporary carpet cover for high traffic areas during construction, open houses etc etc. and cutting it to fit with a generous overlap. They use it frequently as a temporary hole-filler while waiting for glass to arrive. It works well on autos. they have had cars where it has been used for a month or more with no blowing free or leaking---even had people go through car washes with it:eek:

I dunno about on the GW. It won't have a lot of overlap on the edges at the top under the roof lip but I can probably reinforce it with a good grade of duct tape--just in case

LOL @ field expedient...ahhhhh memories :)

In the past I have used the heavy gauge plastic used for drop cloths.

Or a piece of Lexan cut to the same size as the window.

Thats good to know. i need to remove the broken windsiheld in my waggy to get at the cowl rust, this will help me keep the elements out of the interior till i can get the body work done :)

I figgred it might be handy info. Its a LOT cheaper than a sheet of plexi---I'd asked the shop about that--and there have been problems with plexi/lexi going bad on hot summer days.

I'll probably pick some up tomorrow, right now I've got some fairly heavy Mylar taped across the back window opening; but we've got heavy summer thunderstorms in the forecast and I don;t know if it'll hold.

Even when I get the glass from MIB I'll be waiting until I get a new channel from BJs---and then the free weekend-- to install everything

Here's a photo of the glass I had made and had it sent out to get tempered
it cost $115.00 total. Its 3/16" glass,the glass has a 30% tint.
its in my GW now.

glass no tint.(the one you're getting)

my original glass with 75% tint film. The inter wipe scraped the film.

Just got home from visiting MIB in Flint and picking up that back glass. Eric--thank you thankyou, thankyou. His waggy is looking GREAT---I'm envious. Also he's making some real nice interior panels to replace the old rotted fuzz-covered cardboard so many of us have. I'll be ordering a set once I get some other stuff done----like getting that back window fixed.

I've ordered a new channel and the seals from BJ and they should get here tomorrow. Hope to start putting the new channel and Eric's glass in tomorrow night or Sat morning.
I've had the window out before to clean and adjust it a little. but I've lost the thread that had the detailed instructions on how to do it safely. Anybody save that link and could repost it. Also----since the glass crumbled when it was down in side the door, I'm not sure how to get the channels and all that stuff out.
