Hey guys,

I was reading the 1979 Jeep Brochure and I noticed that they said there was a track lock diffential option....errrrr...at least it looks like it might be an option. It does not specify.

Anyways....how can I tell if my chero or any other jeep has this option?

Thank you,

I think the trak-lok is the same as a posi....jack the rear end so both tires can rotate. Hand-spin one side. If your diff is open (like most stock) the other tire will turn in the opposite direction. If you have posi (trak-lok) the other tire SHOULD turn the same direction.

That's the quick and easy way. The other way is to take off the diff cover and see if there's a clutch pack inside. If so, it will require a special friction additive to the gear oil when you do replace the gear oil. Not as spendy as the "special" QT fluid, but almost!

There should be a warning sticker in the glove box and a tag on the differential cover (between two of the bolts). However the above two tests are better who knows if anything was swapped by a PO.

The only sure way is to pull the cover. The Track-loc is very weak and doesn't last long so if it is original, it surely won't show any resistance, mine in the front won't.

If you're really lazy like me, pull into a gravel patch and punch the gas. Once the dust clears look behind you to see if you left one trench in the gravel or two!

On my 89, one time it spun 1 tire down my driveway, but today I power brakes a little and floored it and left 2 even lines down a 200 foot driveway...

I spun em down a pebble covered road a couple weeks ago and both spun the same.

In 4WD, wont all 4 tires spin?
