Wow! I haven't see a Gas to diesel conversion since High School ('80). Those were part of the gas crisis panic in the mid seventies---cooool;)

I saw those on Indy's Craigslist.
I wondered about the 'Diesel'.
My brother has been a Diesel enthusiast for a long time.
He currently drives a 1997 Ford F-150 powered by a Cummins 4BT.
Before that, he owned a 1980 Chevy "Hefty Half" powered by a 5.7L Diesel.
Its 5.7L Diesel had been replaced at point by a GM Goodwrench crate engine, sporting an updated DX Block.
It was a great engine, performed well and was very thrifty on fuel.
The first generation Olds 5.7L Diesel had some teething issues, mostly due to the public not used to a Diesel power plant and abused them.
But GM corrected their deficiencies with the DX block.
By then, the public has lost confidence in them and sadly, GM dropped them.
A Olds 5.7L Diesel will serve you well, so do not listen to the smack folks still say about them to this very day.
They are NOT a converted Old 350 gasser engine, but an engine based off the Olds 350 design.
The Diesel 5.7 Diesel block is a much stronger block than the Olds 350 gasser.
Racers would snatch up discarded Diesel blocks to modify and build a gas engine that would produce crazy HP numbers.
While in stock form these Diesels are short on power compared to an AMC 360 V8,
but I would venture a guess their performance in a FSJ is on par with the AMC 258 I6.
While these engines can sometimes be hard to find parts for,
most everything a person needs to rebuild one is still available with the exception of .030 Pistons.
Here a great resource for the 5.7L Diesel:

Here is some great reading with a lot of great information.
This article explains the differences between the Diesel and Gasser blocks
Oh, I am not the only Olds 5.7L Diesel fan.
Our own scotty, from Dayton, Ohio, was reportedly installing a modified Olds 5.7L Diesel in a Suburban.
Good Luck with your new projects!

Sorry...I forgot the link:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oldsmobile_V8_engine#LF9_Diesel
A person must be careful with the information found in Wikipedia, as it has a good chance of being inaccurate.
In this article about the Olds 5.7L Diesel is very good information.
While there is a 'slight' gap between me and you (you mentioned you were 18 and I am 46),
I would like sometime to stop by and take a closer look at this Diesel rig.
I am only a few hours away up here in Fort Wayne.
Also, if you need some help, I would be more than happy assist in any way.
I am an amateur Diesel enthusiast and my current DD is a '93 GMC van powered by a 6.2L Diesel.
It was suppose to be a donor for one of FSJ projects...a turn of events has caused me to press it into DD service.
Also, I have a Cummins 6BT core stored in St Louis I need to get soon, it will get scrapped.
My long term plans (seems ALL my plans are long term) is the rebuild it for a use in a FSJ project.

Welcome to the madness! :drivin:
That reminds me when I was 18 I had a 78 Old's Delta 88, that my Dad and I rebuilt the olds 350R in, ran great and was quite a plush boat to drive, my g/f at the time drove her Mom's 79 Old's with the Diesel, and we used to joke that it stunk....

Well, after all these years I thought that it was a Gas conversion. I was well familiar with the rumors associated with them. Its surprising that the diesels didnt find there way into other vehicles. How do they respond to Turbo's and other performance inhancers?

As far as I can tell, very few turbo kits were ever made for the Olds 5.7L Diesel and are near impossible to find now days.
It's my understanding that most successful Turbo installs are from enthusiast's that fabricate their own tubular exhaust manifold
and piece together a small turbo, intercooler pumbing, etc...
5 PSI is what what most recommend with a ~8 PSI max.
Yes that is not much, but when you do not have much HP to begin with, a little goes a long ways.
The head bolts (at this point, folks use ARP studs) and head gaskets can not take much more pressure.
These questions would be best asked over on the Old Diesel forum: http://forums.delphiforums.com/350Diesel/messages/
BTW, here are three FREE parts cars:
http://forums.delphiforums.com/n/mb/message.asp?webtag=350Diesel&msg=2279.1
IMHO, it is always nice have spare motors and parts...like Injector Pumps.
(Okay..not really free...you need to haul all 3 away and that could get costly)
