My front axles have two grooves in them for possible snap ring placement. This being the snap ring that holds the drive gear in place in the outboard side of the hub. The location upon dismantling was the outer groove, but I just wanted to double check this placement as I know that these have been previously worked on.
Would seem that the drive gear comes up against the end of the spindle if the inner groove is used so my thinking is that the outer groove is correct. Just looking for a secound opinion?

as you said,it will only go on the one way smile.gif
some lockouts will use the inner groove, but the drive flange will use the outer

Actually...
If you push on the back of the stub-shaft, and push in on the drive-flange against the spring, you should be able to get that snap-ring on the inner groove. That will maintain a better seal on the stub-shaft lip on the back of the spindle.

interesting info bob,i could have sworn that i tried it once, but its been awhile, maybe i didnt try to getit on there very hard ;)
I actually just took apart my front axle hubs to replace the rotors and the clip was on the inner one. This is on an 88 GW. But of course that doesn't mean it was right... :D

Hmm will check again but it seemed that the drive gear came pretty close to the end of the spindle.
In addition I asked this question as I wasn't happy how the outer splines on one of my drive gears overhung the end of the splines on the hub.
Like the idea Bob will measure and give it a try.

It does take some pushing from behind on the stub-shaft to get it seated all the way, and then pushing in on the drive-slug, while pushing that snap-ring on. What I usually do is get the snap-ring on the outer-groove, then push the drive-slug in a bit, pop the snap-ring onto the splines past the outer groove, then push from both ends and use my third-hand to slide the snap-ring onto the inner groove.
Growing that third arm is the real key here. I was lucky enough to have parents who moved us right next to a nuclear power-plant right before I was born, but not everybody is so blessed. :D
