After being neglected for a couple of weeks, I figured I would drive my J-10 around. Starting was a little hard (been sitting for 2 weeks and it was cold and raining this morning) but got it started and drove it to the store. After buying the groceries and returning to the truck it wouldn't start. It would crank and crank but never even act like it was going to start. Thought it might be flooded so I left it for a while and came back. Same thing.

How much gas do you have? Have to ask. Can you smell gas when you are cranking it? Have you taken off the cleaner and check to make sure you are getting gas?

yep, make sure you are getting gas, then check spark.

Don't forget to check the choke, sometimes when it is like that out I have to put a screw driver into the throat of the carb to ge it going.

You might want to swap out the ignition module, especially if it's a non-AMC type. If it's a wells, or Borg-Warner, then you need to start carrying a spare anyway.

One other thing to look at is the pick up coil in the distributor. If you have a voltmeter, or test lamp, then connect it to the neg side of the coil, and see if you get any voltage with the engine turning over. If you don't, the pick up coil is toast, and needs to be replaced. $12.95 at Autozone, and pretty easy to replace.

I dont smell gas when I try to crank it, no matter how much I pump it. So we thought maybe someone had stole all my gas (it was full when I parked it). Poured a little into the carb and a gallon or so into the tank. I have a MSD distributor and ignition system that is only 6 months old. It shouldnt be that. Although while installing a new battery last week I did hook it up backwards for a couple of seconds. But it ran afterwards.

It's possible it could be the fuel pump, then. Did it start once you poured some gas down the carb?

Well I think I figured it out. This guy stole all my gas. To make a long story short... This guy rings my doorbell at 7:30 am, asks me for some money cause he's "out of gas and down on his luck, sleeping in his car blah, blah, blah". I give the guy 5 bucks and he hauls Great Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley Moogley. Next thing I know my truck is completely out of gas after a short drive to the store. The thing is I just filed it up 2 weeks ago and parked it. He sure looks guilty. Man, you help someone out and thats the thanks you get. By the way the gas gauge doesn't work.

glad it was something simple, even if it was a thief
