Im about to purchase some Advance Auto Parts Jackstands but my Dad keeps telling me horror stories about friends who have died under cars on stands. What do you all think? Are there certain things I should look for in jackstands or little known safety tips? Thanks.

you can use ramps, but thats kind of hard if your taking the wheels off.

with tools in general i try to be made in america name brand pieces. look for something solid in construction and made to use under the weight of an fsj.

i don't have any death stories to speak of, but i am guessing a good cause of accidents is by the car slipping off the stand. when you lift the front of the car weight is being shifted to the rear, and vice versa. so if the opposite wheels do not have blocks behind them to keep from rolling off, you risk the wheels rolling to far, then splat. a little long winded but i hope it made some sense

I would not do anything without jackstands. Make sure they are American Made and can handle the weight of your rig. When putting them under make sure everything is sitting level and you should never have any problems.

I'm with GEMOBX I think most people that get hurt using jack stands are either using some pretty cheesy stands (even the cheapest new ones seem WAY better that some of the old ones I've used in the past), or did something stupid (like not blocking the rear wheels of a front wheel drive car for instance). I also always leave the jack under the car for precaution and I never rely on a jack alone

Just my couple of cents worth,

Thanks a lot to everyone for your help. I hope everyone enjoys the fruits of their labor this weekend on the trails, in the mud and on the mountains.
