Could this be what was making so much noise?  :D ;)

I could see that making a large ruckus on bumps and such. Do you still have the screen on the oil pickup? wouldent want that stuff being sucked in through the rest of the engine....just think of what it would do your pistons and bearings!!
Maybe that ultra fine moon dust has something to do with how this happened? I havent driven ont he moon..so cant say...

Rande,
The engine must have just been rebuilt. That's just some scrappings from the piston rings seating. Just change the oil and you'll be fine.

Well, I use the finest oil filters Fram has to offer....so the Moon dust shouldn't be the trouble.
Thanks, SittingBull. I guess that magnetic oil pan plug is doing its job....

The thoughtful assembly line workers at AMC liked to toss in a few extra parts for future use. Mighty considerate of them! :D

Sure it is good. Just put on a new gasket and slap the pan back up there.
OUCH!

Well, that was mighty nice of 'em. Those two extra cam lobes may well come in handy one day.

WOW!!!
That didn't let loose at like 9000 RPM, did it?
Hope I never see anything even remotely like that in any oil pan of mine!
Good luck to ya, and, uh, Merry Christmas???

Ok, guys....gotta let you know this is the engine I pulled out of the new J10 I bought. I knew the engine was no good, just didn't know it was this bad. I have a good engine to put in it.
The PO did a superior job of grenading here huh?

i did that to a 6 cyl 62 f-250. it would run for about 5 minutes, then seize. let it cool for a day and it would run another 5 minutes. but only on 5 cyls :D i trust the block is trashed too. no need to sweat rusty journals on that one.

Rande-
I'll bet you don't feel quite so stupid for not trying to start the engine before pulling it anymore...

That was one of the rare Penske/AMC Matador 425 Nascar motors. You know the ones that had a 95% failure rate that Traco built and were so bad Penske went back to the 366.

Trying to start it would have shown something wrong right off, when one of the rods went through the oil pan, it broke the starter off.
