Over the last few weeks, I have been asking for help on this forum with my J-20 over in the technical section. As a result, I have been talking with quite a few great members on here. Of course, we always discuss our Jeeps and what we like to do with them so I thought I would share some pics of my Jeep and the progress I have been making on it…

I went to rebuild the brakes on my friend’s mudtruck and saw this Jeep sitting in a backyard. When I asked about it, the property owner stated I could have it if I hauled it off. I didn’t have any extra money at the time, but I at least offered some spare parts that I had to the owner to use on their other daily driver Ford truck. 2 days later, I came back with rims, tires, and my car trailer and dragged it home. While winching the Jeep onto my trailer, the owner also threw in 1 new 38” Swamper that was laying near the truck…

October 2007: The first order of business was figuring out what I had and getting the engine running. Research here helped me determined I was the new owner of a 1977 J-20 equipped with a 360/T-18a/Dana 20 with Dana 44HD front/60 rear axles. So I started on the motor and found the water jackets and radiator were full of rust, and it took a lot of flushing to get the coolant looking decent. Then I had to work on the wiring, starter, new battery, new fuel pump, and flushing the gas lines. After about 25 hours of labor, I was able to crank the truck.

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a256/Rutdggr/Night%20Krawler/th_IM004150.jpg (http://s13.photobucket.com/albums/a256/Rutdggr/Night%20Krawler/?action=view&current=IM004150.jpg)

Good and bad news. Good oil pressure, but 2-barrel carb leaking fuel out the side of it. With the truck running, it was time to work on the brakes, hubs and front wheel bearings. I already had a set of Pro Comp exterior bolt hubs which I used on the Dana 44HD front axle. I replaced a few wheel bearings, repacked others, replaced seals, and installed new brake pads. Time for a test drive…

Next I focused on the bed area. I cut most of the rust away towards the front and left the bed bottom towards the rear of the truck. I immediately noticed I could see the rear tires out the back window while I was wheelin. So I took 2 small driving lights and mounted them inside the framerail, pointing towards the inside of the rear tires. I couldn’t believe how cool it was now to climb washouts at night and use the rear lights to spot my rear wheel placement!

Ready to focus on different tires, a friend set me up with these set of 36x12.50x16.5 Wrangler RTs which were surplus from a military Hummer for $100. Not my first choice for tires, but they had over 50% tread, held air, in decent shape and the price was right.

Now I needed rims. I had a unique set of 5 on 5&1/2 16.5” rims that I put online for trade. I got a response, and worked out a deal for my rims and $100 for a set of 16.5”x10” aluminum mods. I also mounted some storage boxes on the bed, with a high lift jack and shovel. The Jeep was comin along…

Next up was the leaking carb and engine running on 6 or 7 cylinders. I had an old Holley 650 cfm 4-barrel that was in need of a rebuild. Another friend worked his magic for $125. For that price, he supplied the parts for rebuilding the carb, and he also provide center hung fuel bowls to help with the fuel delivery during the sand pit krawling I was intending to do with this Jeep. He also did a few other tricks, and stated the carb will work on 70 degree up/down hill climbs, and 60 degree side hill climbs. I tested it in the field, and it sure run smooth when I was wheelin these washouts.

Instead of running an adapter for the carb to the stock intake, I went on an updated with an Edelbrok aluminum manifold. What a difference! Between the carb, manifold, and new coil/plug wires, it felt like a gain of 100 horsepower! Here’s are pics of the parts, the Jeep sitting on hills while idling, and spinning the 36” tires in 3 gear with the transfer case in high range.

Next came Tropical Storm Faye in August 2008 and 16” of rain to our area. Here are some pics of a friend’s flooded property. As a result of the pipe clay in these holes that we were wheelin, my clutch disk rusted to the flywheel and would not release the next week. This resulted in tearing the clutch down for a rebuild, and replacing the disc with a velvet-touch clutch.

I have recently saved up and purchased headers and Flowmaster-type mufflers for the Jeep, I will soon be installing these parts when I save up for the new pipes. I also recently traded my old Honda 3-wheeler for this set of 39.5x16.5 Boggers.

But the end of summer, I would like to do a SOA lift in the front, replacing the old leafs with a set of 6” Chevy springs I have, do a shackle flip in the rear, and bob the rear frame behind the rear spring hangers.

Looks like your truck has taken a lot of work to get to where it is now! Can't wait to finally meet up with you on the trails sometime soon! My Jeep is still up at my parents house in GA, but should be back down in Tally soon. Check out http://www.ttsfabworks.com (http://www.ttsfabworks.com/) for the SOA/SF kit...and if you're interested maybe we can work out a deal. I won a kit for any FSJ recently, but all of my Jeeps already have the SOA/SF.

I see the boggers are cut, are they cupped in the lead part of the remaining tread?

I'm looking forward to wheelin with you, and I am always looking for deals. As sson as I figure out how I am going to do the steering, I will be ready to lift my Jeep. I don't have much mechanical parts for the FSJs, but I do have alot of accessories...

Yes, the cut Boggers are still cupped. My current tires do not pull as good as I thought they would, but they do a decent job on all terrain. It makes sence that is what the military was wanting, an all-purpose tire that will hold up in a wide range of situations.

I'm looking forward to trying the cut Boggers. I have never run them before, but I have years of experience running V-tread tires. I have 2 - 14" wide rims that I am thinking of mounting the rear tires on. I want to run 10" wide rimes in the front to minimize wheel bearing failure and axle breakage. I run this rim setup (10" front, 14" rim) with 40" TSLs on my '86 Chevy, and it runs real well for me...

I have a vw dune buggy that I am working on and I am thinking about trying out some cut and cupped boggers on the rear for the sand and mud around here. I think if I can get wheel speed up high enough, they will clean out and grab.

If we lived alittle closer, I would be glad to let you try these tires out. I have a bunch of other tire brands and sizes too, especially mud tires...

What size tire are you planning to run?

31s, that is the smallest size they come in.

I have a set of 31x11.50x15 Thornbirds or a set of 33x15.50x15 TSLs if your interested in trying them out. I might be headed to western Carolina soon for some rafting/kayaking.
