Over the last few weeks, I have been asking for help on this forum with my J-20 over in the technical section. As a result, I have been talking with quite a few great members on here. Of course, we always discuss our Jeeps and what we like to do with them so I thought I would share some pics of my Jeep and the progress I have been making on it…
I went to rebuild the brakes on my friend’s mudtruck and saw this Jeep sitting in a backyard. When I asked about it, the property owner stated I could have it if I hauled it off. I didn’t have any extra money at the time, but I at least offered some spare parts that I had to the owner to use on their other daily driver Ford truck. 2 days later, I came back with rims, tires, and my car trailer and dragged it home. While winching the Jeep onto my trailer, the owner also threw in 1 new 38” Swamper that was laying near the truck…

October 2007: The first order of business was figuring out what I had and getting the engine running. Research here helped me determined I was the new owner of a 1977 J-20 equipped with a 360/T-18a/Dana 20 with Dana 44HD front/60 rear axles. So I started on the motor and found the water jackets and radiator were full of rust, and it took a lot of flushing to get the coolant looking decent. Then I had to work on the wiring, starter, new battery, new fuel pump, and flushing the gas lines. After about 25 hours of labor, I was able to crank the truck.

Good and bad news. Good oil pressure, but 2-barrel carb leaking fuel out the side of it. With the truck running, it was time to work on the brakes, hubs and front wheel bearings. I already had a set of Pro Comp exterior bolt hubs which I used on the Dana 44HD front axle. I replaced a few wheel bearings, repacked others, replaced seals, and installed new brake pads. Time for a test drive…

Next I focused on the bed area. I cut most of the rust away towards the front and left the bed bottom towards the rear of the truck. I immediately noticed I could see the rear tires out the back window while I was wheelin. So I took 2 small driving lights and mounted them inside the framerail, pointing towards the inside of the rear tires. I couldn’t believe how cool it was now to climb washouts at night and use the rear lights to spot my rear wheel placement!

Ready to focus on different tires, a friend set me up with these set of 36x12.50x16.5 Wrangler RTs which were surplus from a military Hummer for $100. Not my first choice for tires, but they had over 50% tread, held air, in decent shape and the price was right.

Now I needed rims. I had a unique set of 5 on 5&1/2 16.5” rims that I put online for trade. I got a response, and worked out a deal for my rims and $100 for a set of 16.5”x10” aluminum mods. I also mounted some storage boxes on the bed, with a high lift jack and shovel. The Jeep was comin along…
