View Full Version : Trans fluid type?

I want to change the trans filter and fluid in my 88 GW, 727/229. The Haynes manual I bought says the transmission uses Mopar ATF Plus Type 7176 and the transfer case uses Dextron II or III. Is this right that they use two different fluids? I've only had this for a couple of months and I don't want to mess up anything. It's in mint shape and runs great, my wife calls it "The Beast". Thanks for your help, this forum is great.

Use Dexron in the tranny. The fluid specs in the book were probably taken right from the owner's manual. Most manufacturers "recommend" (not "specify") their own brand of fluids to make a little $$$ from the parts department. Fluids and filters from the dealers are actually other brands with their own labels slapped on.
BTW: It's illegal for a dealer to threaten you with voiding your warranty if you don't use factory-brand pats/products. I've seen this happen before.

I can't vouch 100% for the 7176 fluid but if it calls for D2(Dexron 2), you can use D3(Dexron 3). It's "Backward" compatible, but is supposed to be a better(newer) formula.
I am of the belief that D3 would be fine in both, but again, don't want to vouch on the 7176 fluid offhand. You could "call" your dealer and see if it would....any Chryco dealer as it's Chryco tranny. Some parts folks are real helpful and honest...others, well....you know. I would assume that 7176 would be on a par with D3, but I could be wrong.....being the tranny's been around since 60s, and used in many, many trucks, vans, etc., I'd gather that if it were an oddball fluid, it'd be fairly well known.
Have you checked the dipstick on the Tranny? What does it say there?
Take care...

ATF+3 is the same as Chrysler spec 7176 and is designed for Chrysler electronically controlled transmissions. All the petroleum websites I checked do not show it being used in any Dexron application. I would stick to a good quality Dexron III.
I have had several people tell me ATF+3 was backward compatible with Dexron. None of the manufacturers agree.

Thanks for the help, I changed it Saturday and filled it with Dextron III. This is my first automatic, what a mess. The book says remove bolts and then pry the pan loose. Mine started dripping from the very first turn on the first bolt. The fluid ran down all the cross members and it was raining trans fluid. At least my neighbor got a good laugh. More questions to come, I think I'll try the TFI upgrade everyone's talking about.
Thanks,
David
