Ok, I've got a 258 with the 80's type electronic distributor. What wires do I absolutely have to have to make this baby run? No computer. Do I need to hook the motorcrap ignition module in there somewhere or can I get by without it. (Without would be cool)
Thanks guys,
Anthony

Anthony I am not quite sure what it is you are doing but, if the distrubutor was pulled from a rig with the Motorcraft Module then yes you will most certainly need to hook it back up. Only way two ways to get around that, GM HEI conversion, or get a points distributor from old AMC 258. ;)

I didn't really want to make this off-topic but here's what we got. I'm putting the 258 from my '83 J-10 into my '89 YJ. I don't have any of the wiring for the 258 YJs, just the stuff from the fuel-injected 2.5L. I'm still waiting to here from a couple people about some wiring harnesses but I think I'm probably gonna have to wire it up with what I've got. All it's gotta do is run, won't be using a computer or anything. Is the easiest thing gonna be to get a points distributor? Did the '79s still have points?
Thanks and sorry about the off-topic post,
Anthony

Use an HEI distributor off of a GM 250 straight 6...then put a distributor gear on from an AMC v8, and you're set...drop it in, hook the one wire up to switch power, and your'e off.

Done deal now that I see what you are up to. Do the HEI conversion as Ben mentioned :D

Ok, so what can I get that dist out of? And I just need to pull the distributor and put the gear from the V8 on it and it will drop right in??
After that what wires do I need to have hooked up to make it run and where do they need to go. (Need a basic lesson in engine wiring)
Thanks a bunch,
Anthony

Check this out: http://keith.cj8.tripod.com/hei_upgrade.htm
It'll pretty much answer any question you have about the swap. You can find the 250 six in old Chevy trucks and such.
On that site the guy's distributor is one without the integral coil. You can use either. I believe you can hook it up to the switch power side of your starter solenoid. This makes it get juice only when the key is on...which is hwta you want. Don't quote me on this tho...I just think you MAY be able to hook it up there.
