I have officially entered into the FSJ world with the purchase of an '89 Grand Wagoneer. I am mechanically illiterate so this will hopefully be a good learning experience. I was wondering if cruise control came standard on the '89. I can't seem to find anything that looks like a cruise control button on the dash. I was also wondering if anyone knew where I could find a full list of factory specs for the grand wagoneer online. Thanks you in advance and I am looking forward to being a member of this great site.

well, let me be the first to say hi! and congrats on the new waggy. i think cruise was standard. the controls are on the turn signal stalk. a slide switch and a button on the end. there should be a yellow control box under the center of the dash, tucked up behind the a/c ducting. but dont mess with it unless the system is messed up to the point of needing adjustments.

mine works when it wants to

if yours doesn't work at all, check the linkage to the throttle/carburetor; mine was disconnected. When I hooked it up again, voila, the miracle of cruise control.

Yep, it is on the turn signal switch (GM Column). It is a combination of vacuum actuated and electircally controlled. You could have a vacuum hose problem, linkage problem, or electrical problem.

Mine also has its very own peronality. I have not tore into the "Yellow Box" yet, but plan to this weekend.

Has anyone opend this thing up yet???? Are there any adjustments?? Or parts that can be replaced?? Or is it just a R&R item??? Can I get this box at a parts store??????

And.....welcome to the forum Dunbar.... smile.gif

There are adjustments on the "yellow box" but I'm not sure what they do, in fact I'm not sure anybody knows what they do.

Luckily my cruise works but I rarely get to use it because as soon as I turn it on some moron has to change lanes to get in front of me just to go 5 miles an hour slower than I was going.

Yellow box has to be replaced as a unit; a special instrument is needed to test it.,

However, you can adjust the potentiometers on the sides.

The single one on one side of the box is the "sensitivity" adjustment; it should be turned all the way up to being with. (Note: these switchs only turn 2/3 of a revolution and are delicate.)

The switches on the other two sides control the "centering" and "low speed." The swich closest to the edge is the "centering." It should be turned to 10:00 o'clock. Centering controls whether how far above or below the "set" speed is from the "control" speed. You are aiming for a 2 mph difference.

The "sensitvity" swich affects the set speed. If you change sensitiviy; you have to adjust set speed again.

The "low speed" swich controls when the unit kicks in. Start at 10:00 o'clock position to begin with. Low speed should be between 27 and 33 mph.

Drive and adjust.

The factory settings should work unless a PO has changed them previously.

Good luck.

My cruise was finiky too.Had to turn the wipers on to set it,then it worked fine with the accel/decel and it held set speed good.It was in need of a new multi-function switch(as said before GM style).

The cruise control was not working when I bought my '89 GW. I never got it fixed. I figured that there were a lot more important problems with vehicle than cruise control. I just let the cruise control go as it is. My '96 Cherokee has no cruise control.
