I have located a rather large clunk in my beast when in 4wd. I seems to be coming from the front axle when i put it in gear. The drive has about 1/8 turn of play in it. it this very abnormal?

It might be that your pinion bearing is going. Take off the diff cover and look for bearing remains in the fluid. Just a thought.

I have even more play in my front diff. So much that I consider it disabled until I can it rebuilt (which I'm also waiting till I get new springs and bigger rubber under it, at which point I would be changing the gearing). My GW was stuck in 4hi for who knows how long when I got it so its pretty dogged out. I just got a pair of WT d44's off an old chero, and it also had a noticeable difference in the play in the front and rear. the front one had much more play in it. Wish I could do something to tighten up the gears in there for now to make it usable.
