I want to take my chrome strips off my 88 GW to remove rust then give it a quick temporary pain job. I cannot figure out how to remove all the chrome! Is there a thread that talks about this because my service manual says nothing about it?

The chrome on the doors has a little tab that folds over in a few spots, then work down or across one side. I am not sure about the rest.

Google the following statement:

removing chrome trim site:ifsja.org

It'll bring up a bunch of links.

Thanks, I'll try those key words. I tried the google trick for searching and all I found was suggestions to break off the mounting tabs and install new ones on the body when you want to put the trim back on. Supposedly they are cheap to replace.

Chrome, the chrome trim will be going back on after I remove the rust spots under there. BTW, I really got a kick out of that thread a while back about your avatar.

Searching now!

I just removed all of my chrome last week. Around the doors was tricky, I used a grounded down scraper (realy thin) at the corners and worked my way down very slowly. Be careful here because it is bent around the top and bottom along with the two tabs on the ends. For the side rear windows, I pulled the corners off at the back off first, drilled out the rivets and then used a wood block and rubber mallet to gently get it lose then it just slid each piece off the flanges that hold it on. The tailgate just popped right off.

I'm betting you are going to be the one getting the temporary pain job.

Good deal! Always glad to give someone the giggles...except for my wife...and that's a completely private matter I will not discuss here. :D

Seriously, I'm hoping to get paint on my Cherokee very soon and with Kristas blessing I can replace my Picasso style drawing of a Grand Wagoneer with the Cherokee. ;)

Well, I gently pried up the chrome around the tailgate window. As I saw elsewhere, the pinch seam is covered with some type of goo then there is plastic tape on top of that - no rust from there but lots of dirt and bits.
The surface rust that was hiding under there was because of the severly rusted clips holding the chrome on. They look like some type of clamshell to clamp on the pinch seam then 4 little arms to hold the chrome piece. I'm really pleased with the wat this came off.
Now after removing the surface rust I need to put the chrome stips back on. I want to replace the little clips but I'm not sure where I'd get something like that as I have no way to describe it (at work right now and pictures are not able to be loaded.)
Thanks for all the help, so far ...
