Help: Little hole in top of fuel pickup assembly.

I'm in the midst of refurbishing my fuel system. After having the tank professionally cleaned and relined I ordered a new sending unit and a new fuel pickup doo-dad.

The old fuel pickup assembly looked rusty and I figured I shouldn't dunk it back into that fresh and clean tank. The problem with the new one is that there is a little hole on top, about 1/8" diameter. I think it is for a sending unit plug. Except in 1979 the sending unit was separate.

So what's a good way to plug the little hole? I'm thinking a little nut and screw with a few washers and a little rubber o-ring. What kind of rubber will be gas proof?

Thanks for any ideas. Remember, I don't want to ever pull this tank again.

Maybe you could get it spot welded.

Actually, since the whole piece looks zinc plated I'd rather not weld on it. (Don't want to disturb the coating.) I'd hate to cause the thing to start rusting in the future. Also, I'd be reluctant to paint over the weld because I don't want the gas to eat the paint off.

I'm thinking along the lines of a plug. Or maybe some fuel resistant JB Weld or epoxy.

Anyone know of something like that? What kind of rubber (for o-ring) is gas-safe?

I would , get a small bolt washer and nut at the hardware store,
make a small washer gasket from one of the extra carb kit gaskets I have
laying around and then assemble.

You can also use that putty stuff made to seal holes in gas tanks...I think it hardens up well and is resistant to gas.

Those are both great ideas.

I like the putty stuff because that sounds really easy. I was hoping something like that was available, but wasn't sure.

The nut and bolt is what I was leaning towards (because I like nuts and bolts I guess) but was concerned about what type of oring to get (and where?). But your idea about the carb gasket is an excellent suggestion.

Why don't you return the pick up for the correct part??? I got a new one, and it didn't have a hole in it. Try MTS in Dubuque Iowa. They make the poly replacement tanks and will sell sending units and pickups.

hmm, tried to post this earlier and it didn't seem to "stick."

Anyway, I called up the guy from MTS and talked to him about the hole. He said his has them too. (????)
Turns out it's easier to manufacture this way as it's more versatile, etc. (Something about CJ's.)

He says what he does for the hole is to run a 1/4" nut through it with a few rubber washers.

Okay. I'm back where I started.
