I am in need of some tech help. We have a 1973 Jeep Wagoneer with a 401 that is currently in Tucson,AZ. We live in Alaska. We are looking for a reputable engine shop in the Tucson area to rebuild the engine so we can drive it up to Alaska. Any help is greatly appreciated.:fsj:

I don't know of a reputable shop in Tucson... come to think of it I don't even know one in Phoenix. Hopefully one of our Tucson members can help you out.

Finding a rebuilder is just a small piece of getting your Jeep back to reliable. How bad is the motor ? Is it in running conditon ? When's the last time it was driven ? Does it really need an overhaul or just freshened ? How much are you willing to spend or isn't that an issue ? The good engine rebuilders I know of are just that "rebuilders". Your first going to need someone to arrange to get the Jeep to their shop. Then remove the motor if needed and store the vehcile while the rebuild is in process. That in itself can be a deal breaker. Guys with smaller facilities aren't going to want to tie up valuable space for who knows how long. Also someone here, not in Alaska should be made the voice of reason / decision maker when the unexpected pops up. Answer these questions and perhaps someone will be willing to step up to the plate. There are some excellent rebuilders here in Az. Bill V. Pnx.

Sorry to hijack, But I wanted to welcome you both to the forum.
I am quite a ways North of Phoenix, but I have a couple of shops up here I trust and would be willing to help if I'm needed.

Just let me know.

So the engine does run, last driven about a 2 years ago when we dropped it for storage near Sierra Vista. It is just tired and needs to be gone through. This is my truck and it was my daily driver when we had it in CO and will be in AK. My husband is my mechanic but he is currently deployed otherwise he would be the one asking. I will be coming down this fall to prepare my truck to come to AK. My dad will help me pull and deliver just need an engine shop to rebuild to hubbys specs, my need for more speed :D Then I will pick up and install with my dad’s help. Main thing is finding a good shop that works with Jeep that won’t rob me blind. $$ is always an issue but you pay for what you get. Just had 455 for GP rebuilt a few years ago so I know its gonna be pricey. I am willing to drive to PHX if they have a great shop. Would love to make a diesel conversion but since $$ is an issue we are going to do the best rebuild on what we got. Thanks for your help, Jill

Thanks for the welcome! LOVE my Jeep and have missed driving it.

Please pass the shop info along. I would like to start calling now so I can budget and have as much set up by the time I get there as time will be an issue for me. I would only like to be in AZ a few weeks, TOO hot (born and raised in Tucson so none of the BS about dry heat :) ) Looking to drive it up the coast and ship from WA.

Thanks again, Jill

My apologies for taking so long. Life got busy all of a sudden....

Heres the shop info. Its just the owner in there now as far as I can tell. Tell him Jeff from Chino sent you.

Deans Automotive Machine Shop (http://www.dexknows.com/business_profiles/deans_automotive_machine_shop-l806830576)

315 Henry St, Prescott, AZ 86301

(928) 776-0132

I have a friend that has a 9 second AMX, but the guy he uses is backed up a VERY slow. Dean did me right when he did mine. He did all the machine work and I assembled.

Hope this helps.
