Found a '74 J20 setting out behind a hay barn (isn't it amazing how the FSJ radar works?!). Knocked on the door and asked the elderly woman if I could go look at it and if she knew if it might be for sale. She said her son bought it a few years ago, but didn't know much about Jeeps, it never ran very good, so he just pulled it out there and parked it. I would have to talk to her husband about it, of course he was not home. But she let me go look at it.

It is in pretty bad shape. Looks like it had been used to heard cattle and never washed. The normal rusted out FSJ. But the hood latch worked and after fighting off wasps I looked in the engine compartment. Besides all the ugly things I saw, I noticed that it had the exhaust manifolds plugged where the banjos were. The wasps would not let me clean off the tag on the rocker arm cover, but I am pretty sure I could make out a "709H". It has an A/T and no locking hubs.
The VIN # J4A462ZZ68463 says it should have 401, TH400, QT, etc.

My question(s)....Does the "709H" & the later model emissions exhaust manifolds probably mean that the 401 was replaced with a 360???

I just looked at a 74 that had banjos on the exhaust. Still had a 401 in it. Did it have a 4 barrel intake on it or 2 barrel? Of course best thing to check is on block under motor mount for casting ID. Head back out with a flashlight and can of RAID.

Yep, tried to get as close as possible, but could not get a side view for the trees, weeds, and wasps.

What would the valve cover ID tag read on a 401???

And was thinking of offering maybe $50 for it, but if it has a 401....then it may be worth a tad more....huh???

Tag should have a Z in it for a 401. H would indicate a 304; N,P a 2V, 4V 360. 709 is Sept. '74.
