tailgate window sticks

ive been playing with my 78 401 a litle,its geting ready to go to the body shop but i cant roll down the rear window more than 3 inches before it sticks. is this a comon problem ? if so what is the culprit? how do i unstick it or unjam it? there isnt much room in the back doe to this cabnit that the p.o. stuck in the back.but there is enough room to crawl around it to get to the mecanism. what should i do?

sandmanb, before you pull the access panel, check out the lower channels(the two approx. foot long brackets on either side of the window when it is in the closed position) You can see these by shining a flashlight down through the top of the tailgate. Over time, the rubber/felt can tear and ball up in the channel as the window tries to close, causing it to bind. There are a couple of ways to fix this...hopefully that's all it is.. smile.gif

I had a similar problem if it sticking is asosciated with a clunking you might have few teeth left on the main drive gear on the motor I am going with a crank as this seems to be a problem area. Good luck!

I have the same problem. I found I can get mine down if I "help" it a little though. My problem is that the guide came loose from window it self. I'm either going to weld or JBweld it back on.

I had the same problem with mine. I replaced the window channels (it is not that hard to do, but they cost like $80 for both of them) and it works fine, except when the weather gets reeeeeeaaaly cold.

the proper fix for that is to carry passenger/wife/well trained dog with you. have passenger/wife/well trained dog hold lever switch down, egress from the vehicle, walk to back, repeatedly pound on tailgate until window cooperates into the down position. repeat as needed.(passenger/wife/well trained dog holds lever up to raise window). return to driving postition of vehicle as muttering to self "must get **** thing fixed". :D DENNIS
