Can anyone tell me the weight of a 1986 J-20 with 360 v8, auto, no ac?

My 81 same setup was 4500# with mine and the dog's fat butts in the cab + tools behind the seat, so say 4200# curb weight

Thanks I was thinking it was more but I'll assume 4300. I need to trailer this one home with my F-150.

It'll be a load....but if my POS Cheby can do it for 250 miles in wind...the Ford surely will.

Here's to those trailer brakes.

WELL DENNIS IN NEW YORY STATE THERE ARE SOME BIG LOOOOOONG HILLS. LAST TIME I WAS IN TEXAS IT WAS VERY FLAT. THE LONG UPHILLS LIKE TO COOK THE TRANS FLUID. I AM GOING TO TOW A CJ 7 UP THERE AND THE J-20 BACK. POOR F-150, SUCKS TO BE HIM......

Brought my J-20 down from Moab UT with a 1500 GMC van and I tow my 77 Cher every where with it. I use equalizer hitch and sway link and good brakes.:D And I have been over Vail Pass in Co. a number of time. Just don't see how fast you can go.

I pulled the kids J20 home with our Navigator. No problems what so ever even in the hills. used it to pull the j4000 parts truck home as well. Didnt even know it was there most of the time.

Joe,
Dad's 1982 J20 in stock form, none a/c weighed 4,950 on the scale at the quarry. The truck does have the stock bed mat that weighs at least 75 lbs.

He meant to say "African or European?" in his best British accent. ;)

In reference to weight ratios, I believe. :D

Joe, I'll bet you remember my posting of the crazy trip I made to bring home my Diesel Donor.
(which I might add, is my DD as of 2 weeks ago)

Here is my J20, loaded and ready to pull out for the very long trip home.

After a long afternoon and early evening, we stopped a Gilman, IL for a bite to eat at a truck stop.
During dinner, I wonder how much the van weighed, how much was I towing and how heavy it all had to be.
So after I dinner, I paid $8.50 to find out.

The results: My J20 weighs 5160 pounds and the trailer with the van weighs 7220 pounds.
Total Gross Weight: 12,400 pounds!

My J20 was on one pad and the van/trailer was on the second pad.
But, the way I had the van loaded, the trailer was very tail heavy, thus, the light tongue load and severe fishtailing.

WOW BRYAN THAT A LOT OF WEIGHT. My 2008 F-150 has the 5.4 and the 3.73 gears but to tell you the truth it is a bit gutless. I find that when I see a long hill coming up I take it out of OD and try and hit the base of the hill at about 75 it will go up the hill fine. If I day dream and find myself on the hil at 60..... forget it there is no torque to do the job.

Any one want to guess how much a 1981 CJ 7 with 360 t-176, 32's and a hard top weighs?

I'm not sure what the weight of a J20 would be, but I'm sure it couldn't be much more if not a little less than my '66 Gladiator. I had no trouble towing it home with my '01 GMC Z71 on a 16' trailer through the hill country. If you have the 5.4L I imagine your F150 should tow it just fine.

I did a short trip with my J20 towing a 70's F250 on my trailer, the F250 also had a bed full of misc. wheels and junk never weighed it, but it had to be the heaviest thing I've had behind it towed just fine. Chances are you'll be fine, but a coworker of mine had a simmilar truck and said he felt nervous towing his 30' camper with it.

My brother's '83 CJ7 weighed around 4000 with a similar setup. (350 instead of 360 and 33's instead of 32's.)

I was just curious because I will be towing my CJ 7 up to New York for the summer and will be towing the J-20 home to NJ so that I can do a lot of work on it for next years snow plowing season ( which can start in October). I have a 16 ft steel trailer with the rear beaver tail and the J-20 just fits on it length wise. It's going to be a long hump home. It sucks to be my F-150's transmission.............it's going to get 700 miles of torture.. At least it's still under warantee.

I'm ready for Ford to get their Diesel problems figured out.

Sure miss my F250 stroke & 6 speed.

When building shop, had a buddy's gooseneck dual tandem and backhoe on it....no problems. Many long trips taking load of Cypress logs to mill for molding.

I've driven thru upstate NY on the way to Dunkirk @ Lake Erie...pulling my 22' Gambler boat. Beautiful rolling hills....Had a Ford 1/2 ton back then....Ford made it back OK, but ruined / totalled the fiberglass bass boat on those Ocean waves @ Erie.
Also lost a wheel bearing & hub on trailer.
