Folks,
The prices of new vehicles are down and my life has made a change with the new 6 week old baby. My dad and I are kicking around some ideas. We may possibly sell his truck (red J20) and he would buy mine (1986 J20) and I would purchase a modern 1/2 ton crew cab truck and go from 4 vehicles down to 3 vehicles. (This ain't easy - let me tell you.......... so final decisions have not been made).
What do you think this truck is worth?
The truck is a 1982 J20. The truck was a demo model with a few thousand miles on it when Dad purchased it from the dealer here in Cincinnati.
Description:
~75,000 miles
4 speed
208 transfer case
professionally repainted a couple of years ago
always been in the barn
minimal exposure to salt
undercarriage has always been washed
new rubber cab mounts in 2008
a few years ago we removed the seat and floor pad and herculined the inside of the cab (there was no rust present, this was just done for preventative maintenance)
new radiator fall of 2008
seat reupholstered ~ 3 or 4 years ago
dual exhaust
factory Jeep bed mat
flex fan
stock 360/2bbl carb
Problems:
Needs a window lifter in the drivers door and the weatherstripping on the windows should be replaced.
16.5" tires that should be replaced

I'm not sure. I wonder why not just sell your truck instead of going the "Merry-Go=Around with cars?

the only reason i can think of going in the marry-go-round is that his dad's truck is in better shape and they can probably get more money out of it.
i would say, easily 3-4k if not more.

It would be cheap and easy to fix the lifter and weatherstrip issues and IMHO would make it worth more.

I checked out the slide show. Nice low mileage unmolested looking J truck, red looks good on those. I say, 2500-3000 as it sits, more if you fix the strip and really clean it up.

Why the merry go round -
1.) my truck is in better shape and would benefit my father with an automatic transmission - he is getting a new hip in July.
2.) I have done a ton of work on my truck to make it nice - tbi, paint, bedliner, interior, all things mechanical etc......... and this work wouldn't totally go to waste by keeping it in the famly. (both trucks are mechanically sound enough to drive from coast to coast)
3.) Our family likes J-trucks (been very reliable) and are way too attached to them (our fault).
4.) I probably have a touch of new car-itis and this is the closest I will ever come to owning a new vehicle.
5.) Sleep deprivation of a new child must be getting to me.

Steve I wish you luck, stuck my 99 Jimmy out for sale...and hoping to use what I get towards a down payment on something newer...
I'd say...$3000.00 easily enough..Stick it on ebay with a reserve, and also list it at the same time on craigslist..

While it maybe true you can get more for dad's truck, It may take a little longer to sell. Most lookers will only see on old truck, not a low mileage one owner vehicle.
Wow Steve that's a hard choice..Nice to be keeping your J20 in the family but that 82 is sweet. I wanted another Brow truck ba danggone.. Maybe an 82 to replace my 81 would be better. Let me know what price you decide to aim for. I'm back in the market for another, but to be honest it will most likely a 77-79 model.
For those of you that have never seen Steve's truck up close all I can tell you is this is what they looked like new, and then some. The guys at work compliment it everytime they see it,Steve works down the street from where I work.
I think you should fix that window problem and possibly new window seals if the old ones are half gone. Cheap and easy fixes that will make a difference right up front. Keep your eye on craigslist and if the rubber is shot then maybe throw on some decent used tires. Some people look at a tire purchase at the start of ownership to much of an expense.
If you don't get in a hurry to sell it then you should recoop your costs and then some. I'd start with trying to sell it here and on Craigslist. I don't think I would go the Ebay route after watching a few lately just returning back to auction and never getting close to what they are worth. Then again some surprize me. That is a good looking truck, Good luck:thumbsup:

NADA guide shows 82 j-20 in average retail value at 5000.
Average Retail Value
This vehicle would be in good condition overall. It could be an older restoration or a well-maintained original vehicle. Completely operable. The exterior paint, trim, and mechanics are presentable and serviceable inside and out.

I can't get the pics up right now (dialup) but it sounds like a vey solid truck. I paid $2900 for My 87 with 62K one owner miles on it, and it needed/still needs...
Driver's floor pan-done
bed repaired/clean bed installed
rocker panels
cab corners
and just a general cleaning up/taking care of other minor body issues
Considering what I'll have into mine when it's all done I'd say 4K or more would be good on the 82.
OK OK guys I don't want to pay more for this.. I'm barely scraping up what he offered it for. I hope He finds a new truck to replace his.
Yes it is a nice truck with very few issues. Hopefully it will be in my drive in a week or so. Then it is off to Indy and Ft.Wayne then back to Warsaw and off to Florida and possibly Co.
