I was watching the mustache guy on my classic car (I wish he would shave it!
But they were converting to disk brakes so I went to http://www.stainlesssteelbrakes.com
They didn’t have anything for the Cherokee but Wagoneer shows this for $675 http://www.stainlesssteelbrakes.com/pages/detailsShow.asp?componentID=379 and why does it say 35 here and 44 in the pdf file...

A few years ago when I was hanging with some of the local Mopar crowd one of those guys did the rear disk conversion on his Ramcharger.
He said spend the money on someting else.
The $$$ and effort spent did not yield any noticable improvement that was worth the $$$. Other than bragging rights of having it done. Better to spend the $ on a D60 that already comes with monster brakes.
Anyway, just the opinion of someone who did it.

i got tired of having to adjust my rear brakes every time i went in the woods, and the shoes only lasting 3 months.

i did the conversion not neccessarily to bet better braking, just consistant brakeing. i did mine with front mounting plates and calipers, and 91 and up k1500 rotors for the cost of 2 rotors,2 brand new calipers, new pads, and 2 brake hoses for a 77 camaro.i finally got to drive it yesterday, and it stops as well as it ever did when i actually had functioning drums.

i woudl agree that rear discs are not worth a big price in the performance increase standpoint, properly adjusted drum brakes will stop you very well, and if you dont pack em full of mud eveyweekend, maybe even the shoes will last you a log time.

a friend of mine did rear discs on his dana 60 and that turned out to be very easy-much easier than the semifloating 44.

only prollem i have(and dont consider a prollem) that will bother alot of folds is no e brake http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/eek.gif

Hey Scott,

He did a D60? How? What'd ya use? I'm *very* curious about that set-up.

What'd you do for proportioning valve?

As for E-brake.. the teeth on my pedal are worn off... my e-brake doesn't work. Any solution for a fix?

in his case he is using a vw turning brake, which doubles as an e brake. he made a little flip up brace that holds the handles up-very effective. it kept his jeep from rolling down his very steep driveway for over a week without budging.

since he didnt need an e brake,we simply used front calipers. ive heard of people using some kind of cadilac rear calipers that have levers for a mechanical e brake, but im not sure how they compare to the front calipers that were using, they may be different sizes.the easiest fix IMO is to use some sort of hydraulic lock on one set of wheels.id thot bout using a "line lock" for drag cars that has a little solenoid, but people say that those will leak down after time.not real sure. the local VW place(larrys off road) sells a thing called a park lock for rails and buggies that just fits in a brake line.it is designed to be an e brake,so it should not leak dow after time,id think, only prollem is youll have to run brake lines inside the vehicle. its only $39.99. im planin on using the turning brake on the rear, and maybe the park lok on the front.thats just me,tho, ive never cared for able type e brakes and would rater use some kind of electric/hydraulic or hydraulic mechaism.

anyway, the d60 rear discs were simple.hardest part is finding 2 more 3/4 ton front backing plates without having to buy a whole nother front end http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif we used the chevy ones since they are solid(not a cheezy flimsy dust shield like the jeep),and give you more room for redrilling the neccessary holes.

now you simply buy 2 new front 3/4 ton rotors, and attach them to the rear hub with the 16 new front studs. now remove the rest of your drum brake BS.all you need to do is space the front backing plate out from the mounting flange.we tried to space it out so that the rotor was n the midle of the caliper. we had a little spacer made that ended up being about 1/2" or so thick. now you just knock that center thing off the front of the front backing plate and transfer the bolt holes form the mounting flange to the front backing plate and bolt it all together.he used front brake hoses form a 77 gmc to attach the caliper to the hard lines.the 'Zone stocks em for 16.99 and they are LONG!now for brake service you just remove the caliper and hang it out of the way, just like the front.

we are both currently using factory master cyls and proportioning valves.his are both factory xj.mine is a 78 impala m/c,79 j10 booster, and factory 85 GW proportioning valve.
