Has anyone had any luck swapping in alternators off of different vehicles? Do alternators go south if left unused for a long time as in at a junkyard?
I don't want to pop for a new one for at least a month (Christmas bills).
Thanks, and Happy New Year

By swapping alternators, are you talking about from one jeep model to another or from a different kind of vehicle to a jeep? As far as I have experienced with alternators, they are like any other part. Sitting, especially in bad weather, can cause them to take a dump. However, I bought a generator for an old beetle I used to have. It was an original from a dilapidated older bug in horrible shape. Looked like heck, but the thing still cranked out the juice! Wrecking yards often offer an exchange policy for a couple extra bucks. I would invest in that and take your alternator to an AutoZone or Kragen. They will test it for free. If it's good then your on your way to installing it, if not then you can go back to the wrecking yard and exchange it for a different one. Happy hunting!

YOu still have the 327 in your truck? If so I still have my alt from when I had the 327. It is just sitting in the garage doing nothing. Pay the shipping and it's yours. Let me know by email if you want it. I can even get you some pics to see if it is the same one you need.

You can get a 75 to 85 GM SI alt and get a 1 wire regulator kit to do a change over that will eliminate the external volt reg with out having to do a lot of wiring. The last time I bought a 1 wire reg the were $15 but may be moe now.

The modern alternators are worth it to swap in, they have higher output, simpler hookup and are more reliable due to the internal regulator. I swapped one into my 67 pontiac and my 73 chevy work truck and have had no problems since.

If you're scoring one from a scrapyard, I'd make sure they warranty it to work for at least a few days and then go have it tested at a parts store. If its no good, go back and get another to try. That way, you know you're getting a good part for cheap! :D
