I need some advice on a 360 I intended to rebuild.
I wanted to borrow a guys engine puller, but he talked me into using the heavy duty winch (with a frame) on his truck -"it's quicker". I agreed (big mistake).
Anyway, the motor came out beautifully, then buddy got in his truck and went to pull ahead. When he hit the brakes, the motor went up, then came down - all the way down - hard!!!
Damage report:
- Crushed the oilpan (sump area only) and bent the sump suction a bit.
- Also, hit oil filter and took out the pump and timing cover. Other than that, it looks ok.
- No other impact spots, no damage on the front pully or the ring gear, but I still had the torque converter on.
Do you think there could be anything wrong with the block or the crank???????
What would you do with the block?
Any other comments appreciated.
Thanks,
Frank

Since you said your planning on rebuiling it anyway, I would have every single part magnfluxed. Good luck brother I feel your pain.

Exactly what Angry Joe said.....Get that thing Magnafluxed ASAP if you're gonna rebuild it. I work on helicopters in the army and ANY part that we can't do an ultrasound inspection on for wear and tear gets magnafluxed(those that require it). Seeing that that bad boy took a 6 foot drop, I just hope it ain't like the metals Sikorsky Corp. uses on the Blackhawk. Cast Iron compared to Magnesium though.....i'm gonna go out on a limb here and say you should ....I say again SHOULD be okay---BUT GET IT FLUXED...and next time

Thanks AngryJoe/L8sleeper.
I'll look into the magna flux thing. Why does that have to be done ASAP? Is it less effective after time?
I don't know a lot about MagnaFluxing, do you know a good link? The homepage isn't great.

Well, ya need to take it to a mechanic in town or Victoria to a place that has the capabilites to do it......Your next step after striping it down should be to get it "fluxed" due to the fact that you had that bad boy dropped, and well though most likely not salvagable, if it is....then you'll keep the thing from gettin' any rust in the cracks, seeing that you're there on Vancouver Island and all, sometimes rust and stuff will fill the hole, but erode when you least expect it. Been known to happen, seen it first hand(you try changing out parts at -20f with no heat for the first 3 hours...IT SUCKS!!! LOL) We had a "bird" up here that had some cracks on a strut that went unnoticed, and when we looked at 'em after the fact, noticed alot of corrosion in the cracked areas. Good luck on your rebuild!
