89 GW - Front Lockout hubs?

I am a newbie. 89 GW. Can you install lockout hubs on the front axle, instead of fulltime locked? Will this hurt the transfer? Will this help gas mileage? This site is great! Finally found information strictly for the GW.

Welcome !! You have certainly come to the right place. Great bunch to people here and a TON of SJ know how.

You can certainly install locking hubs on your 89. If you put it into 4wheel drive with the hubs UNLOCKED you can kiss the viscous coupler in your 229 Xfer case goodbye in very short order. I looked into doing this on my 87 but the people who have done it and also Warn have said that any milage increase is little or none.
