Engine year? Help !!!

I dont know the year of the engine that I have in my 85 GW I changed it out and dont remember what year it is could someone point me in the right direction to cifer the numbers ??

What are you needing to do to the motor? There really isn't that much difference as far as bolt on parts are concerned. About the only difference I can think of is the lower compression ratio of the 80's rigs.

If the intake is original to the engine, there is a casting date directly in front of the carb.

I found the info in the tech library but it don't seem right it tells me
that hte engine I have was made 10/15/79 but it had a plastic POS
valve cover on it did they start putting them on that early ?
The intake is off the oridiginal engine so that don't help. What I am
needing to do is rings and bearings and need to know if they are different
from year to year so I don't have to trust the counter guy at the parts store !

Not for sure on the 258, but the v-8s had the years cast into the heads under the valve covers.
