View Full Version : Ideas wanted for J10 shortbox and rear frame

As I parted my J10, I found that it would be interesting to make the short box into a trailer to put behind my wagoneer. Another member even has a similar interest...The rear frame needs some patching, but it would work out.
I had to cut both sides just behind where the tranny crossmember bolted, as it was pretty much rotted away from there forward.
What ideas if any are there for setting this up as a trailer, it's got the AMC 20 rear. And I saw it posted here in the past, but is there a pop up tent kit to put on these short boxes?

What about welding a mobile home tongue onto it where its been cut off? I would think the 20 would be fine as long as it does not leak fluid and is kept up.

That's one thought.

This is the way I done mine. I still have the AMC 20 under it and I put the surge brake on it. Right now with the wheels centered on the trailer my tongue weight is to light. You can flip the trailer up real easy, I need to add about 150 to 200 lbs to the tongue. I am thinking of the same thing of making a camper out of it to put behind my J20

Or put a rear stabilizer jack on it, that way it won't be so tipsy.

I like those roof top tents. Make a hard cover that the tent goes onto, that way you can use the tent, and have the bed for storage. When you need to use the trailer for duties, you can take the tent off with the cover.

Has anyone found a good source for those types of tents?

Here's the one I made. The rest of the truck was shot so I made this from it. I've hauled two dana 60 front axles in it plus other junk (in a single load) and has held up and pulled like it's not even there. It was well worth the effort to make. It's got the AMC 20 which is doing fine.

So getting enough tounge weight is problem?

I've got the AZ truck with 126" WB that I could put my old bed on.

The 126" WB has more bed behind the rear wheels than the 132" WB
J-Trucks.

Thats what I am having a problem with. With the trailer unhooked if I step on the tailgate the trailer will tip up.
If you got more bed in front of the wheels that will be a big plus for extra weight. You need about 12" in front of the wheels.

I would have even more bed behind rear wheels 126" WB , so toung weight would be less than a 132" WB ....Correct???

Put a cap on it (toppers, whatever the local lingo is) and finish the inside off. Add tongue weight by hanging a toolbox/propane tanks/dual 12v batteries/spare parts :D Finish off the inside with 3/4" plywood and that funky green rec. carpet from Homedepot :D There, instant pull behind camper.

So does a long trailer tounge make balance more favorable to tounge weight?

A longer tongue is not what you need. When I build a trailer say 5' wide x 10' long bed I try to put the axle 4' from the rear and 6' in front of the axle. This will let you load the trailer so you can get a 10% tongue. If you build a trailer with equal weight on each side of the axle and you put the weight over the axle, as you are driving down the road the trailer will start to rock back and forth causing the rear of the tow vehicle to raise up and down taking away traction and braking from the rear of the towing vehicle.

I'm going to keep watching this post and learn more before I do what I'm planning.

Lol maybe a cheap set of RV stabilizer jacks for the back while it's parked would help..

So what you are saying is if you are going to make a trailer with your extra truck bed make sure it is a long box?

Doesn't have to be. The important thing is weight distribution, and it is easier with a long bed, than a short bed, but either will work. You just have to pay more attention to the load with the short bed.

x2, pay attention on how you load the trailer. And that is true on loading any trailer.
