There are super chargers available for the 4.0. The 258 isnt as suited to a turbo do to its rpm range. Not that you couldnt do it though. But doing it to an EFI engine is FAR easier. As with a carb, you need to do quite a bit extra work, and it will never work as well.

I have seen a couple diffrent turbo kits for the 4.0. So you might be able to make one of those kits work.

Google up 505 Performance. I've been to their shop and delt with the owner, cool guy. If it's possible, he'd know.

IMHO, if your gonna go to all the expense of a turbo i'd advise swapping to a 4.0head at least. Better to add the 4.0s fi as well. The 91+ head flows MUCH better than our old 258s do. And i would recomend a super charger over the turbo any day. Just due to the fact that there is no "lag" with a SC. Again... just my opinions:)

Turbo? You might as well stroke your 6 and be happier with that. Anything is possible with money but I wouldn't turbo a carb motor. I wouldn't even waste my money on a super for a carb motor. Unless your racing it, you might as well look into swapping in a V8. Ther is no replacement for displacement.

lag? thing of the past... the only lag that you get any more is due to a sizing issue, s/c's are a lot harder on the motor than a turbo will ever be (should be noted that i have a supercharger mustang)
as far as the money, a decent draw through turbo could be set up for under $1300 without an issue and they perform great... just look at turbo vw's, the only issue you may have is getting the carb to work with inclines
honestly, i think you could do a head swap and freshin up the motor with a turbo and make plenty of power while still improving fuel mileage for under $1800 and the 4.0 wont be able to touch the numbers n/a that the turbo frankenstien motor will be able to lay down, add fuel injection and you'll make even more power and have better drivability, shouldn't be to difficult to grab the parts from a junkyard, issue comes when the truck is cranked for the first time and needs a tune.... not sure how many people do cherokee flashes in your area, might wanna find out ;)

It's been a few years, but Offroad magazine had an article about installing a turbo on a 258 powered Jeep. That was probably 88 or 89 IIRC. They didn't even change the plastic valve cover, but did recommend changing to the aluminum cover just in case.
