208 locks in high range. 229 does not. 208 is lighter. and uses a longer driveshaft, beneficial in taller lifts.

So which brand do you guys think is best?

Warn or Superwinch?

I know Warn are more popular, but popular doesn't always mean better...

In Warn's case, I'd say it does. Doesn't mean Superwinch hopes won't work just fine though.

Can someone explain the differences between the two?

I really do want to know why one is better than the other-I've had someone offer to install the Superwinch brand on my rig-

In this particular case it indeed does...

This is a real can of worms… lots of pro’s and con’s to discuss.

There are three types of winch gears…Planetary Gears may be the most common and most of the companies use this. Warn still uses a worm gear in their 8,000 lb model (I believe) and is just about the only company still using them. Superwinch and Ramsey also use some spur gears.

Two basic types of motors. Series Wound will draw more current but do not heat up as much as Permanent Magnet, which draw less amps but are more sensitive to heating extremes. You may have to let it cool down between pulls. Stick with the Series Wound motor, most all winches have these with a few lower echelon Permanent Magnets thrown in.

The thing to take a look at is the pulling strength after the first layer of line is pulled off the winch, there can be up to 4 layers of line on the winch.

A careful study of these specs is necessary due to the fact that an 8,000 lb winch in one brand can only pull 2,500 lbs on the fourth layer while another brand will pull 6200 lbs.

I would stick with Warn M8000, as the 2,500 lb rating is the Superwinch LP8500

Then there is the speed of retrieval to consider, some are much faster than others, you also need 400 amps or so of electrical power to get these going. A Warn 8000 will pull at 8-feet per minute while others pull at 3-7 feet per minute.

A Warn gives you a lifetime warranty, while most Superwinches give a 2-year warranty.

And when all is said and done, you really need a 12,000 lb winch.

Check out these comparisons…

Excellent tech, but I think you are confused. I believe the question was about hubs.

I couldn't say which is best as I have never used Superwinch hubs. I personally like MileMarker hubs. Almost identical to Warn design, are cheaper and I have not broke one yet.
