whining noise in NP229

when i have my wag in 4HI it runs fine. but when in 4lo there is a whining noise. it seems to be working fine , but the noise is annoying. i was told that the 4lo sounds like this. is that true? if not is the internal or just a u joint(does not seem like it though)? thanks for any help

The noise that your hearing is the planetary gears. It is normal to hear some noise but it should be slight. If it is really loud you might want to check the fluid or better yet change it.

I know that nothing is wrong with my 229 and it does make a distinctive whinning noise when in 4L. No diff in noise between 4H and 2WD. Worry about cluncks, grinding and snapping. http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/eek.gif Although like JeepFreak said, check the fluid and if you think that it is making to much noise, check into it a little further. Maybe listen to a fellow FSJeepers rig to compair sounds.

fluid is new and in good shape. it sounds like it is the normal whine of the tc. thanks for the answer. i have not heard any grinding or clunks from the tc.

Mine whines in low also. My question is can anyone hear their 229 turning in 2wd going down the road? I can hear mine, always have and has been that way since I bought it. Gonna change fluid next week.

Shouldn't here anything coming from the tc in 2WD or 4H. At least I don't. Ummm, maybe something else in the drive train is creating the noise you're hearing. Just a thought.
