So I am contemplating tossing my "under the rig" spare tire holder in the scrap heap-will a 31" tire fit under there?

If not, do I have any other mounting options (other than tossing it up onto the roof?)

A tire sitting out in this sun will rot fast on the roof, there's got to be another way?

I know on my 71 J2000 (that uses the same style tire carrier as your Waggy) I was just able to fit a skinny true 31" tire under it. Was NOT fun trying to get it up into postion though. That suka was heavy and barely fit.

Some folks are sticking 31's underneath. I'm gonna give it a try once I get my lift and tires.

I believe that there's a 30X9.50 tire underneath my GW and it looks like a 31 would fit. It would be a tight fit though and quite a struggle to get it up there. I'd suggest using a jack to hold it somewhat in place if possible.

Have you ever thought maybe inside like the XJ Cherokee's and just make a cover for it would take up alot of room but between sitting on the side of the road and driving home :drivin:Its worth it

Mine is laying on the floor in the back under the cargo cover.

If you mount it on the roof or in the rear, use a cover to keep the sun off of it.

Man what a pain in the butt to go under and get the spare in mud, rain, slush...I got me a nice swing away tire carrier and would not trade it for anything....also free up room underneith for air tanks, bigger gas tank ect.

I couldn't agree more!!

But, for a GW, where in the heck would I find a spare tire carrier? (And why am i thinking this would be really expensive?)

I'd love to use that extra space for a second gas tank-or just a really big one.

IIRC - phatmax95 - has a 33" spare in the stock location.

I have a 32x11.5x15 under the back of one of the GWs. The carrier is modified a bit to allow for the width of the tire.

X2 on getting a 31x10.5 under mine. It is the wifes DD so to make it easy on her, its laying in the cargo area with a chunk of plywood and a rug over it. With a jack under the arm, it is doable, but is also a major PIA.
When I got said Jeep, it still had the factory spare under it. Like thats going to work with 31's....:banghead:

Well there's no way I could do that right now-I'd screw up any healing my ribs have tried to do.

Hmmm....maybe I should have someone put my spare in the rig for me (after she gets outta the hospital.) My Brother took it out to put in the new rear brakeline.

I could let the shop try to put it back up in there after they mount it to my spare rim. If it won't fit, then THEY can put it in the back, or up on top.

I have a stock interior spare tire carrier, you would probably need to massage the wheel well slightly w/ a hammer:D to fit a 31" tire.
