View Full Version : What is this plate?

I'm rebuilding an 86 360. Before taking the intake manifold to the machine shop to be hot tanked, I removed a vented cover that was rivited to the underside of the intake. Beneath that was a plate, approximately 1/4 to 3/8 thick bolted directly opposite the carb location. For purpose of hot tanking, I also removed this plate. Now it is time to put everything back together, I can't remember if there was a gasket between the plate and the underside of the maniflod. I can't find one in the scrap box with the rest of the scraped gaskets and crud, but it could have been missed and come off in the vat.
Anyone out there familiar with this plate? Does it require a gasket?

I believe it is an oil splash pan. There was a thread about this a few weeks/months back. I have heard that it should be saved, and re-attached before assembling everything. Ask Lindel or Joe, they should have the knowledge to better answer.

btw, if anyone is knowledgeable about this, should it be removed from the factory 2bbl intake and re-attached to an edelbrock 4bbl intake? Is it necessary?

I don't recall a gasket under my stock manifold, but I can look tonight when I get home. You will need to reinstall, though.
I might be wrong, but I think it's being used effectively as a "hot plate", to help vaporize the fuel from the carb, since it's directly inline with the heat riser passage. That's the only usage that leaps to mind.

Lindel:
If you would look I would appreciate it. I'm planning on completing the engine this week and installing this weekend (and based on my skill level, possibly next week). If I need a gasket, I've got to find one before then. Thanks.

No problem, Greg. Will do tonight.
BTW, I was in your neck of the woods, just this past Saturday, at type-O's place.
If you think it would be quicker, I can call you. email the phone no to leasley@tvec.net

The plate is actually a heat shield, and yes you need it on the performer intake. I do not remember a gasket.
