I am still working on my water pump. Been almost a week of working a few hours a night. I got the AC loose finally and got the new water pump back on, but I do not remember how the brackets for the alt goes together. And like a dumb *ss, i never took pics of it. Can some one snap a few pictures of how the brackets for the alt go together? Thanks.

Hey, thanks for the help. This is very frustrating. In fact, I am making myself take a break. the problem I am having is getting the set up right. From the pictures, the larger bracket goes over the water pump hose. If I do that, how can i tighten that bolt up? I know there is a spacer for the water pump bolt right above the heater hose, but i don't remember any type of spacer below it. I am trying to get just the larger bracket on and it just doesn't make any sense here.

When I got my last pump from Checker, the one I took in had thicker material (spacers) where those 2 bolts go. The one they gave me did not have the extra metal there, and the bag with the gasket had 2 spacers in it. The smaller one went between the A/C bracket and the longer went between said bracket and water pump under the heater hose outlet.
Does that help?

I tried using both spacers (individually) that came with the water pump and it seems like when I put the spacers in, the threads from the bolt don't reach the threads in the hole. It would make sense if the threads engage. I will try just the bolt with the spacer and see if I can get it to fit. If it does, then I might be back in business. I appreceate all the help y'all have given me. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel here.

Okay, I tried aagain with the spacer, and the original bolt that held the old water pump was too short. I tried a longer bolt just to see and it was too long, but with the 1" spacer, I see how it works. When you replaced your pump, did you have to get a longer bolt? If the original bolt was just a little bit longer, it would work. Even if it was only a 1/2" longer. I might give that a try.

Again, everything was easy on mine. Went back together the way it came apart. The only difference was the spacers were part of the casting were as the new one was thinner and the spacers made up the diff. Are you sure you didnt use the wrong bolt on the other side under the double ended P/S bolt?

Man, I know exactly what you are going through! Yesterday I pulled a/c compressor and alternator off and I could not get the alternator bracket back on. Had to go introduce myself to a guy across town and take pictures of his to get mine back together. I feel your pain, brother!!

Well OK, but if you are going to insist that you are a dumb @ss, who am I to argue. :D Take a deep breath, and stare at the spot where it goes for at least 1 minute. Oh and if you like beer, drink one while you are staring.

Hey,
I finally got it togwther today. A big thanks goes to Jaber and Wagoncrzy. Your pics and diagram saved my life. I must of looked at those pictures about a dozen times. I would look at them, go outside attempt to get it together, it wouldn't fit, come in clean my hands, look at the pics again, go out for round two. I finally had to bring the larger bracket and the water pump bolt in the house with me to make sure I was using the right hole. Once I got that, the rest went back together easily. One area that really threw me was the bolt for the alt bracket that runs to the water pump. I am sure I had the right bolt when I pulled the old water pump out, but once I tried putting it back together, the bolt was just a little too short. I ended up going to Ace and getting a longer bolt. I found one that was the exact same except it was 3/4 on an inch longer. Just enought to get it in with the 1" spacer and the alt bracket. I did end up having hose troubles that I spent about another two or three hours. While I was testing out the jeep, all was good. Then all of a sudden, the temp jumps up to the 260 degree range. Pull over, shut er down, pop the hood, and once again, anti freeze everywhere. I am thinking Great Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley Moogley!!!!! As I start to look closer though, I realise that teh pump isn't leaking, the thermostat isn't leaking, and only one side of the engine has the antifreeze. Look to that side closer, and see that the lower rad hose popped off. I get it back on and make sure that the hose is all the way up against the rad, tighten down the clamp and limp to Walmart for more antifreeze. Let the jeep cool down, put in more anti freeze and try again. All is good for about 5 min then again up to 260 again. Now I am really mad. Pop the hood, and the upper hose is just steaming out. I pull the hose off and realize like the bottom hose, I didn't have it on all the way. On top of that, the tube on the radiator was crushed a little from the hose clamp. Got the socket out and used it to pry the opening back out. Saw that the fan shroud was blocking the radiator hose from sitting all the way in, so loosen up the radiator and shroud, re-seat the hose properly, tighen up the hose clamp then tighten up the radiator and shroud, filler er up once again, and finish my test drive. Temp is sitting where it should, no leaks, and one newbie who is very proud of himself for getting it done. I have learned a lot from doing this. Again, thanks to the board for all the help, especially Jaber and Wagoncrzy.
