I have a '73 J4000 with the closed, ball and socket (military style) axles. It has never turned real good, but a year or so ago, we replaced the steering box with one my mechanic had in his surplus (not from a jeep, but looked just like it) and I am thinking the gearing ratio is not the same. It turns worse, I think. How many times will your steering wheel turn from lock to lock? I am thinking I need to pull this steering box, and replace, but don't want to do it, if it is OK. If you have the same set up, let me know how many times you can spin you steering wheel from one direction to the next. THanks

I have that info at home in my dealer data book. I want to say it's 2.5 turns from full left to right. I can also check in my truck tonight.

I am only getting 2 3/4 turns with my current set up. Is everyone else getting 4+ like Marc?
Thanks everyone,
Lynn

That answers my question, Thanks. Off with this steering box, and on with the correct one. then I maybe I won't drive over every curb doing U turns!
