View Full Version : Ideas for a Midwest campout/Jeep event?

I threw the idea out today to Ricbee and ThePigSmith, they seem to like the thought.

Anyone up to our own gathering..similar to Ouray but for our area. Hardest part is...where?

One thought is Silver Lakes, sometime towards Late August early September? (labor day might be unwise).

Throw up the ideas here, and maybe we can start organizing something to put in the Events section.

I am up for a Silver Lake camp out.
The time I was there in the fall of 2005 was great!

The Dunes were an awesome place to play.
As Rick and I both tell you, you do not need to have a ride to out on the dunes as there will folks that you can ride with!
I rode with Larry Miller and had an excellent time.
I hope to have my J10 if go this year and I can return the favor and let someone ride with me!

As we discussed the distance to Silver Lake may hurt some folks.
If you are reading this, would like to attend and a have a better place, please suggest it.

JeremySmith had a Website for a Midwest Gathering, but it seems to no longer exist and I have not seen him make posting since last fall. :(

I could make it Its about 5 hours for me. I can meet up with bryan in Ft wayne my route would go through there. Ive always wanted to take my jeep to the dunes.

There is the possibility to go to the badlands but that place isnt too forgiving to stock fsjs

It looks awsome would love to go but I dont think my jeep is up to it. having no lockers really stiff suspention and no lift.

Just remember, the idea is for an 'open to all folks event'. Ideally we'd all be driving FSJ's to where ever we pick to do the gathering...however realistically, you might be car pooling along, driving something else, but the idea is that some of us might have Jeeps there, and hopefully we'd get to share a ride on the trails, or what not. There should be fun for all classes of FSJ's there from stock to modified.

Hey all! I'll try to keep an eye on this and get the old jeep running for it! I've been missing my FSJ fix lately.

Jeremy! Long time no see!

The later the better for my Jeep to be done.

Do you want to suggest a date, Larry?

I know I tend to be more motivated when I've got something specific to shoot for.:drivin:

Okay guys so were aiming for the Silver Lake Dunes?
How about sometime in August?
Into the weekend ending the 29th and 30th? If I could make it, that would be when.

Probably need to make reservations to the State Park campsites in the coming weeks.

I'll be out of town that week/weekend. Got to go to school in OKC

I should be available pretty much any other time.

This sounds good.
Just a thought on the date.. When does school start back? Will that affect anyone that wants to attend?
Just something to keep in mind. Any weekend works for me but, after Labor Day is even better. I don't want to be on the highway on Labor Day weekend. Maybe my Jeep will cooperate as well.:o

JeepBountyHunter

I actually work that weekend, but just might be able to convice work to bump me back a week on vacation...that remains to be seen.

I just need to see what I can do with my time off at work...I'm the only one in my position so no one to switch with.

As far as I know, I'll be able to go that weekend. I'll probably have to ride with someone for gas money, unless I can talk the wife into going. Then I can bring hers...;)

Silver Lake

Forgive me for cross pollinating here, but a bunch of us Scrambler fanatics will be there the weekend of August 1. We went for the first time last year and had so much fun in our son's Scrambler that we we went out and got ourselves one too. I have a friend who has gone every year for 30 years.

Here are a few links that you might want to check out. There are permits and other requirements that you should familiarize yourselves with.

http://jeepscrambler.wikispaces.com/2009+Silver+Lake+Scramble

http://www.silverlakeforum.com/

http://www.thinkdunes.com/hotels,-motels--resorts-21/

http://www.cj-8.com/forum/showthread.php?t=22008

There is discussion and links for campgrounds and motels buried in there somewhere. Some of our guys stay at the Hideaway Campground or Silver Sands Motel. If you don't mind a hot tub in your room, you can stay at the Dunes Waterfront Resort. That's where we are staying this year.

We won't be able to make it with the full size crowd this year. We'll be in Cape Cod that weekend celebrating my wife's graduation from college after 30 years of trying. One of these years, I hope to actually meet someone on this board.

Hope those links are useful to somebody.

I've been there in Oct. I wouldn't neccesarily want to camp then. Plus, alot of the town packs up and leaves. It was cool to watch the storm whip across the beach.

I'm with Larry on this one......I didn't get the Cherokee running on time, maybe by then! Oct is my favorite time there, less crowded, not so hot! Most of the town is still open on weekends, and the weather varies.....I've seen people swimming in Lake Mich in Oct,but I also saw snow once!Mostly it's in the 60's in the daytime, cooler at night, depending on how late in the month.I used to go the first weekend of Oct every year, the weather was always perfect! Also the hotels are way cheaper in the off season. So maybe have a second one,I'll be there!

Later in October would work for me, also.
I like the idea of fewer folks in town.

Also, that would give me time to get my J10 back on the road.
Which may lead to a late September Work-O-Thon at my house.

Empire, Mi would be the wrong dunes, those are sleepy bear dunes=no driving on dunes.
Silver lake is about 3.5-4 hours north of the Indiana line.
