Today I picked up my 89 GW from the repair shop, and drove it for the first time after buying it this winter. It got a rebuilt carburetor, new fuel pump, new drums, it passed inspection!

HC were 209<220 and CO was 0.69%<1.25%, I was expecting much worse. How does that compare to other wagoneers? What should I do to lower the HC levels?

It was a southern vehicle (KY) so the body is great. Inside, I have a thousand little things to do before I'm done like a new headliner and fix various electrical gremlins (slow windows, tailgate only works from the dashboard switch...).

I am missing a couple of things and if anybody has them, let me know:
- front license plate holder (we need two plates in NY)
- gear selector knob
- LF wheel center cap

It is Cordovan (burgundy). I thought the shifter was black plastic?

Cool...

On my front bumpers, there are 2 square holes in the bottom, middle. There are square incerts that clip into there and the screws go into them. Any Mc parts house should have them in the "help" section.
You'll have to oped up the access panel on the rear gate to see whats happening there, it could be just dirty switch contacts, if your lucky...

It was worth it but I wondered what I got myself into more than once. The car had been sitting for a couple of years and I wanted a real mechanic to look it over. Good thing too, because the PO made a mess with the engine wiring and vacuum lines.

It just feels solid going down the road. I stopped to gas up (of course the gas gauge is inaccurate) and all the guys wanted to talk about it, one even ran his hand along the back! Those cars seem to resonate with people

Those cars seem to resonate with peopleWell Said! You did the right thing letting someone who knows the mechanics look it over since it sat for a while. Krista's 77 waggy had sat for a few years. The obvious was all the dried out hoses under the hood. First time she drove it the heater core blew and steamed the windshield while driving in a snow storm. She had to hang her head out the window and eat snow to get it home. Ya mostly try to avoid those experiences. :D Say, what about McResonate and the Way Back Machine!

How about electric windows? The driver one is good but the others are more or less lazy going down and especially up.

Its about the same. pull the motor off and clean old grease out put new grease in. lube it all up and clean the plug connections also.
If you do a search, I think theres been a write up on it.

How much fabric do I need for the headliner? I can get a roll cheap but it is 72x54, doesn't feel like it would be enough.

Any luck with the knob or the front plate bracket?

The license plate bracket is the same one used on the XJs so you should be able to get one at the junk yard cheap. Our local pick 'n pull has about 6-7 XJs on the yard at any one time.
