I made a call to the local boneyard where I have pillaged all of their GW's. I told the owner of my problems finding an engine for my 84 GW. He took pity on me and told me he just acquired a F*rd truck with a 460/C6 combo and he'd let me have the whole thing from fan to driveshaft, carb to oil pan for $500 with a warranty. Tomorrow I go to pick it up.
Since I plan to make the swap this weekend, I have a question: I have done more radical transplants, but is there something unusual I should be aware of?
Thanks,
Greg

Sound good to me. Ford 460's seem to be pretty reliable and tough motors. I know quite a few people who have them in their small motorhomes.

What do you plan to use for a T/C? Just curious..

if its coming from a 2wd ford, then your gona be stuck with 2wd, unles you change the tail housing if I recall corectly. As the 2wd version of the c6 has no way of having a t-case bolt to it, they use a slip joint in back. Or at least the 2wd C6 in our 77 F150 does.
As for putting it in...the heater box will be the only problem, a body lift solves these problems. It may still fit, not sure. I could actually measure tomorrow, as our ford has a 460 in it, I could mearsure the width compaired to the 360...

WIDTH, the 460 will fit but its WIDE. Watch out for starter and steering shaft issues. Check to see if the power steering pump is on the same side as your jeep too.

Stock the power steering pump is on the driver side (or is on our 77), so that shouldent be a issue, except that its designed for a different box, but should work...I think ;p
You may also need to stick a AAL up front to compensate for the weight.

Here is some useful info I used when comparing engine sizes.
Engine dimensions swap chart (http://www.westechperformance.com/pages/Tech_Library/Popular_Engine_Specs/dimensions.html)
Ford 460 specific dimensions are:
429-460
Width: 27"
Length: 34"
Height: 30"
Weight: 720Lbs
Its a couple hundred pounds heavier than the 360. How new are your front springs? Take some pictures if you can. I can get a good running '95 460 for $400. Tempting...

To cool  my dad had a Merc 460 police cruiser interseptor motor in a 1976 F-250 4X4 years ago. Man that motor could pull. I am looking forward to seeing how your's turns out.

Update:
I went to the boneyard to pick up the 460 when the owner told me of a 351w that had just come in. So I have opted for the 351 for size, ease, and hopefully a bit better mpg than the 460. If anyone is interested, I can take pix of the process. It seems to be easier since the dimensions of the 351 are a bit smaller than the original 360.
Later,
Greg

Good Choice, although I'm a big Ford fan, a 460 seems like overkill in your particlular situation. I've driven/owned several Bronco's and F-series trucks with the 351-W motor and they all ran HARD, just be sure your getting a 351-W and not a 351-M, there is a big difference in size, weight, and performance, they are not the same motor. (I think heads are the big difference)
Anyways good luck and keep us updated, sounds like a very tasty alternative to a Chev 350 (I hate em, who the hell puts the distibutor on the back of the motor?) Anyways although I jest about the Chev motors, the 351-W is a great alternative and parts are every bit as cheap & available as a 350 Chubby. (just my $0.02 worth)

Let me know if you want to multi-port inject it...I can help with the wiring, intake, and fuel system.
I have done several EFI 5.0 swaps into little jeeps including my own CJ-7. The 351W is basically the same. I'm going to be picking up a 351 from a lightning truck to put into my Cherokee in the springtime.

The 351M is a 335 series engine like the 400M and the 351C. Several parts from the 351C will work on a 351M, but the 351M has far poorer performance, worse gas milage, and weighs a tad more. But many performance parts for the 351C will bolt right up to a 351M.

you just saved some green in of your wallet. talk about a gas sucker.
I owned a '78 t-bird with a 351M in it. Ran great with 150k on the clock. The windsor is even a better motor correct? Sounds like a good find to me.

Stuka hit the point.Am I right the 351M is a Windsor with Cleveland heads? To me,I'd love to have a 351C HO.A friend has a '73 Stang with one with Ram Air.Very nice motor.

If you can find a true 351C they are awesome motors with huge intake & exhaust valves, they are designed to run hard. I think some (351CJ?) even had 4 bolt mains in it. Nothing wrong with a 351W though and parts are much easier to find, you'll like it!!

If you get to the point with the 460 that your oil filter interferes with anything up front (I think they point straight down or at an angle) I'm pretty sure you can convert to a 90 deg. set up with the adaptor off an inline 6 from a van.

Sounds pretty good. The 351Windsor is the easiest of the 351's to find parts for. Though it doesnt perform like a Detroit, parts will be a helluva lot easier to find! Youll be able to find parts at just about any salvage yard now!

The Windsor should be far better (than a Cleveland) for the following reasons:
-better oiling system
-slightly less weight
-smaller high velocity ports (good for torque!)
-much better parts availability
-easy to convert to fuel injection if needed
-less expensive
-can be made to perform as well as any engine of
similar size

The Boss 351 (also used in some trueno's had 4 bolt mains.
And the 351M isnt a 351W block. The block is almost identical to that of the 351C (same block series), but other parts differ. But many parts can be swapped from one to another as stated above.
And yes 1973 was the last year of the real 351C. When the 351M came out, ford originally called it the "351 cleveland", but it confused many people as the engine was different. So they changed the name to the 351M. Which also included the 400M in the engine series.

that someone built in cali and drove it to wi where i bought it off a ford dealer for 500.00
that thing was wicked . after i changed gears from 3.08 to 3.89

Way to go!! I would like to do that very same swap. I am a Ford man true and true. I just built a 351w for a guy at work. It runs real strong in his heavy 1-ton ford. I put on all of Edelbrocks performer stuff, (cam, intake, carb) He was real happy with it. It got me to thinking about my tired 156,000 mile amc.
