i just picked up a 85 grad wagoneer from my boss for the low low price of free. he said it didnt run and had been sitting for 5 years if i could drag it off his property i could have it. 1 hour later and 2 trips to nappa i drove it home.

i have been looking through the tech library and found some stuff on the emergency drive. after looking through the glove box there is no switch there and it looks like some one else when through it looking for the switch because the cardboard was all torn up. i crawled under the jeep and i have the NP229. there is a sending unit on the T-case with no wires hooked up to it.

what do i have could the switch have been moved somewere else?

this will be used as a rock crawler when i get the funds to build it up so i will want emergency drive.

Hey brother. First off congrads on your new jeep  . Second I am fairly new to this FSJ thing but I am pretty sure your jeep didn't come equipped with the emergency drive set up. Only the full time 4wheel drives with the quadratrac transfer had those.

thanks for the quick response! that would make scene it looks like they put a bunch of oddball t-cases in these.

while i was under the jeep i noticed my gas tank skid was all most completely rusted to pieces. please tell me there is something else holding that gas tank up there.

He is right. The full-time 4WD QT Wagoneers and J-trucks were the only ones that would have the emergency drive in them. If yours is an '85 then the NP229 sounds right. The NP229 is a part-time 4WD transfer case and could probably be used as a rock-crawler especially if you install some lockers in your rig. Even though you don't have the QT system with emergency drive you still got a heck of a deal on getting an '85 GW for free.

On the 85 the skid plate is the gas tank support... unless it was modded.

As for the cardboard of the glove box being chewed up... this is what happen when you try to fiddle w the audio.
