Well here we go again folks. It's a good thing I installed an elctric fuel pump or I wouldn't have made it home after the S. AZ get together last Saturday. Here's the deal:

My rig drove great to Tucson that day. Did some wheel'n and stuff, driving around. When it came time to head home it started to starve for gas. Now, it may be in my head but I think she didn't want to go home just yet.

I'm geting that "your running out of gas" sensation so reach over and flip the electric fuel pump on and she smoothes right out. Had to leave it on all the way home. Turned it off a few times to check but started starving again so left it on.

Here's what i think is going on so you can tell me what you think. The mechanical fuel pump (New last year) has to be shot. All the elec pump is doing is forceing more petro down the lines. Now, if the mechanical pump was doing it's job it would be reserculating fuel back to the tank and there would be more than enough petro for the carb to feed off of.

This could be a long standing solution for the VL syndrom if I'm correct. So give me a name of a good manufacturer of our OEM mechanical fuel pumps. One that you can vouch for. I will purchase and install it and give you a progress report. TIA, Bob.

Yeah Bob considering where you live(yikes hot!) VL is prolly the prob. Electric pumps do seem to be a cure for that though. If your elec pump is one of those el cheapo square gold jobbies(they do work though) rather than looking for a good mech pump invest in a really good electric one and a fuel regulator valve. Mounted correctly...that should be end-of problem. As much as I hate electrical stuff "good" remote electrical fuel pumps work well and last a long time.

Have you ever looked at the cam that runs the fuel pump to see if it is still good? Just a thought. But it does sound like VL to me. I am having similar problems.

LOL,...took the title of your post literally, opened it up expecting to see a 401 powered Gremlin :D

Good luck with Jeep

Yea but is it really VL or just a lack of flowing fuel?

if it is truly vapor lock than getting the fuel lines and filters away from high-heat areas (like perched on top of the engine) and/or insulating them will help a lot. but i still like the solution i ended up using when i converted to efi: mounted to the frame rail is a filter, an electric pump, and another filter. the throttle body gets fed by a hose running up the back end of the engine. have not had a problem since.
